AGIOS EFSTRATIOS
The only settlement and port of the island Agios Efstratios has a population of just 250. Good cared for houses with grapevine arbours and fruit-bearing trees around them mark the area, while the picturesque bays, the chapels and the caves are its unique highlights. The few people live mostly on cattle-raising, cheese-production, fishing and the cultivation of the not-so-fertile grounds of the island. By boat from the port of Agios Efstratios one can possibly visit the quiet beaches of the island or go further to the east of the village where the ruins of a settlement from the Mycenaeic period are, which was also preserved during the Roman and Byzantine years.
