which lies 2.5 km west of the village.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL & FOLKLORE COLLECTION OF AGIOS KIRIKOS
The small Archaeological and Folklore Museum of Agios Kirikos is situated
in the centre of the neoclassical city and is housed in a hall of the High
School. It includes Neolithic tools, grave piles, vessels, coins, articles
and lithographies depicting the historical background of the island.
The castle of Nikaria is situated to the south of Evdilos, above Kosikia.
The Byzantine fortress of Koskinas, as it is also known, dates back to the
10th century when it protected the island against conquering invasions.
THE CHURCH OF AGIOS KIRIKOS
One of the most important sights in the capital of Ikaria is its cathedral.
The Metropolis of Agios Kirikos is dedicated to St Demetrios. During the
years of the pirate invasions, the islanders found refuge in the caves of
the island, escaping through the trap-door of the Metropolis.
The remains of an ancient temple that is believed to have been dedicated
to the worshipping of Artemis Tavropolis are found at the small harbour
of Nas, a landscape of unique beauty. These significant finds are believed
to belong to the period between the 7th and the 5th century BC. According
to the legend, this was the location the Naiads chose as their residence
thousands of years ago, and that as soon as darkness falls on the caves
within the rocks, one can hear the cries and whispers of their ghosts.
The radioactive springs at Therma have been known since antiquity. Remains
of the ancient thermal baths have been preserved in the area until today.
The thermal springs are used to cure rheumatism, disfiguring arthritis and
arthritis of the vertebra. It has also been proved that they can help in
cases of nervous exhaustion, while they are ideal for the treatment of various
gynecological diseases.
