The
architecture of Ikaria is obvious in its capital, Agios Kirikos, which
is one of the most picturesque settlements among the eastern Aegean islands,
a typical example of neoclassicism. Its two and three-storied houses have
triangular pediments on the facade, reminders of neoclassicism, while the
roofs of the houses are made of slate, that is abundant in the subsoil
of the island. However, not only the cities but also the lifestyle of the
island has its own colour and is a continuation of the past. The Ikarians
are people that hold on to tradition and customs of the past. At the big
festivals of the island, the feasts, the weddings and the engagements,
there is a lot of fun and everyone is full of excitement. Dancing, singing
and litters of local wine accompany every kind of entertainment for the
locals, which also sweeps away the lucky visitors.
