Folegandros THE PEOPLE & THE PLACE
BACK ISLAND 's MAP AREIA E-MAIL

PhotoFolegandros is the most southern island of the Western Cyclades and lies between Sikinos and Milos. It is 32 sq. km in area and is 102 nautical miles from Piraeus. The gulfs of Porto Vathi and Plaka divide this mountainous island with the steep coasts in two. The ground of Folegandros is rocky and full of bushes which produce excellent thyme honey. The climate is dry and very healthy but the barren soil does not favour cultivation. The 600 inhabitants of the island are mainly engaged in fishing and the tourist trade, which has been grown considerably in recent years. Visitors to Folegandros "adapt" to the serene, relaxed way of living of the locals and get to know their quaint manners and customs.
