Visitors to Folegandros feel taken inby the strange attraction of this barren
rock.
The amphitheatrically built Cycladic
town of Hora has preserved its medieval
character till today. Its houses were built
one next to the other, creating an external
wall for fear of pirates. On the mainland,
the more modern houses are snow-white and
have wooden coloured balconies which look
out to the sea. The island's churches have a
typical Aegean architecture. Panagia (Our
Lady) overshadows all other churches and
impresses one with its austerity.
The inhabitants of Folegandros are
simple, pure and warm-hearted people who
keep their traditions alive. They never miss
the opportunity to live it up at the local fes-
tivals where they dance the "ballos" to the
sound of folk instruments. Easter is such an
opportunity and is celebrated with all so-
lemnity. The procession of the icon of the
Virgin lasts until Tuesday of Easter. On
Easter Day, there is a big feast at the
square of Hora, in which locals and tourists
alike can take part.
