Patmos TRADITION
BACK ISLAND 's MAP AREIA E-MAIL

PhotoHora, in Patmos, has been declared a traditional settlement. It was built by skillful builders following a traditional technique, taught from father to son. The stone houses are white with thick walls, mosaic floors and wooden ceilings. The stone, surrounding the edges of the doors, creates a beautiful contrast to the white walls. The houses are built close to one another, and the flat roofs are to gather the rainwater. The city's alleys are narrow and are separated with arches, each of them having its own name. Hora is of a unique architectural style and the result is beautiful and noble. The islanders honour their religion and tradition, and this is evident in all of their customs, especially those at Easter. On Good Thursday, the inhabitants of Hora have a recreation of the Last Supper. Twelve monks represent Christ's students, and the Bishop washes their feet. At noon on Good Friday, at Agios Ioannis Theologos the removal of Christ from the Cross takes place, and the night of the Resurrection is celebrated contritely around the island. On the second day of Easter, the Municipality offers free lunch to strangers, while the feast includes instrument players and Dodecanesian dances. The wedding ceremony in Patmos is of a unique style, as in all the Dodecanese islands. The celebration lasts several days, among the sounds of the lyre, the "sandouri" and the "tsambouna".
