The island of Tilos preserves many elements of the traditional Dodecanese architecture. The stone houses have flat roofs and coloured windows. The inhabitants of Tilos are open-hearted people who enjoy the simple pleasure of the local feasts, where the folk instruments players play the violin, lute, guitar and "sandouri" and the locals dance the "sirtos", "sousta" and all the other Cretan dances. In all the feasts of Tilos, the locals dance the dance of the "cup". The head dancer holds the cup and throws money in, as long as the dance lasts and he can afford it. Then, the next dancer takes the cup and continues this act. The money is used to restore the island's churches.
