  • [01] The European Commission debates the liberalization of visas to the SCHENGEN countries

The European Union might renounce compulsory visas for the Romanian and Bulgarian citizens that travel to the Schengen countries. Sources of the European Commission told FRANCE PRESSE which in its turn is quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that the permanent representatives to Brussels will discuss the possibility of granting a six month period of trial to Romania and Bulgaria as these two states remain the only two candidates to adherence to the European Union for which visas are compulsory.

Foreign Ministers of the European Union states will discuss on Monday whether to adopt new measures in connexion with visas for the Romanian and Bulgarian citizens that travel to European Union countries. The reaction of the 15 was rather hesitant to the proposal of the European Commission. The special correspondent of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI to Brussels asked Leonello Gabrici, spokesman of the European commissioner for domestic affairs and justice for a point of view regarding this issue.Mr. Gabrici replied that a point of view would be premature as Romania and Bulgaria must first comply with the request of having secure frontiers as well as strict control of illegal immigration.

[02] The Symposium MULTIDISCIPLINARY REGIONAL RESEARCH

Timisoara and Resita are hosting the international MUTIDISCIPLINARY REGIONAL RESEARCH Symposium with 325 papers presented and debated in all domains of the scientific life, including biology, agriculture and environmental protection, chemistry , medicine and social and humanistic areas. Romanian researchers as well as their colleagues of Hungary, Yugoslavia and the Republic of Moldova are attending.

[03] The International Rating Agency FITCH improves rating of Romania

FITCH has improved the rating of Romania at the chapter of hard currency debt on long term from B minus to B and did the same thing for the debt of this country in the national currency while the rating for the short term debt remains unchanged, and is also B. This comes as a consequence of the fact that starting the summer of 1999 the status of Romania in the international arena has improved sensibly. The monetary and fiscal policies have led to the decrease by more than half of the current deficit. Still Romania is one of the weakest countries in as far as rating of FITCH is concerned and is still vulnerable to domestic and foreign shocks.

[04] Foreign investment for Romania and Bulgaria reaches about 3.5 thousand million euros

Bodo Hombach, coordinator of the Pact of Stability in the Balkans of the European Union, said that in comparison with last year foreign investment in South Eastern Europe has doubled. The main end-users of the 3.5 billion euros worth foreign investments in the area are Romania and Bulgaria.

[05] Turkish - Romanian bank pays in keeping with schedule

Persons that wish to withdraw their money from the Turkish Romanian branches are welcome to do so in instalments of no more than three thousand USD. Companies are not yet able to do business with the bank and the stock of the TRB with the Romanian Mercantile Exchange is not negociable yet.

The Press Bureau of the Turkish Romanian Bank did not give our reporters any hint as to when business with Romanian companies is resumed. According to some sources this weekend the Turkish Romanian Bank might receive from the National Bank of Romania a credit which is large enough to cover all needs.

[06] Romanian - Greek talks in Bucharest

A Greek delegation led by the national coordinator of the pact of stability, Ambassador Spiridon Dokianos was received on Friday by the Secretary of State with the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Romania, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu. The meeting was focused on the way in which the budget for Romania is administered, a share equal to 78 million USD of the Plan of action of Greece from the Pact of stability. This fund is divided in instalments for an interval of five years and it is to finance Romanian infrastructure projects. Talks also unfolded regarding the economic chapters as part of the Pact of stability for 2001. The Romanian side told the guest that this country would prefer one single conference destined to all states that are end-users of the Pact. Ambassador Dokianos underlined the fact that Athens has already worked out a plan according to which, in the overall picture of reconstruction of the Balkan area, Romania is the second end-user of the economic plan of Greece.

[07] Statement of the Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu

Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu has said that in December state ensurance pensions are being increased by 4 - 5 per cent as inflation is deemed to increase by another 2.5 per cent. The percentage comes from the State Treasury as the state ensurance budget cannot provide the sums of money needed. At the same time the Prime Minister of Romania said that the price of power does not go up and that the Cabinet will examine next week the ways debts of power producing companies could be written off. The government would rather not write off Value Added Tax money as this could be seen as a precedent and instead it will try to compensate the price of power coming from hydro power stations to that of thermal power plants. According to the Prime Minister of Romania the money needed is of 150 thousand million lei a month and the decision of keeping the prices at the present level is aimed at maintaining inflation at already foreseen quotas.
