    Cypriot observers at Palestinian elections prove special ties

    Nicosia, Jan 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus participation in the group of observers at last Sunday's Presidential elections in the Palestinian Territories was small but it proved the special relationship which Cyprus maintains with Palestine, Israel and the Middle East in general, said here Tuesday Interior Minister Andreas Christou.

    The Minister said the Cypriot delegation, was made up of only two representatives, compared to the total of 650 observers. However, it showed the special relationship which Cyprus maintains with Palestine, but also with Israel and the Middle East region, he said.

    MacShane: Unthinkable two EU member states not recognising each other

    London, Jan 12 (CNA) -- British Minister for Europe Dennis MacShane has said that a situation in which there are two member states of the EU who do not recognise each other is unthinkable.

    MacShane made this statement in writing on Tuesday when asked by Labour MP Tom Cox whether Turkey will be required officially to recognise the existence of the Republic of Cyprus before it is granted membership of the European Union.

    Disappointment with inconclusive result in locating remains of missing

    Nicosia, Jan 12 (CNA)-- The representative of the Greek Cypriot side to the Committee of Missing Persons (CMP) Elias Georgiades has expressed disappointment and concern with the inconclusive result of excavations in the Turkish occupied village of Trahonas, which failed to locate any remains belonging to persons listed as missing, believed to have been buried there during the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    ''This development has brought great anxiety among the relatives of missing persons, whose agony and sensitivity must be respected by all'', Georgiades has told.

    London, Jan 12 (CNA) --A British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) spokesman has told CNA that in 1974, when Turkish troops invaded Cyprus, ''the United Kingdom did its best to honour its obligations from the Treaties'' of 1960 that established the Republic of Cyprus.

    Putin: Russia supports Annan's efforts on Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jan 12 (CNA) --- Russian President Vladimir Putin has stressed that Russia supports the efforts made by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan regarding a Cyprus settlement, ''including his plan to develop economic relations with Northern Cyprus, to remove the blockade that it has been in force there for many years''.
