    Stockbroker arrested for missing funds

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- The Nicosia District Court has remanded a stockbroker for eight days in custody to assist Police investigations into the case of almost 10 million Cyprus pounds missing from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) pension scheme, which had been put in the care of his company, ''Suphire''.

    Paphos, Mar 28 (CNA) -- Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has expressed the Greek Cypriot side's readiness to start negotiations for a Cyprus settlement as long as a new initiative is prepared the right way.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 29/03/2005 to 30/03/2005 ---------------------------------------- Mainly fine weather with temporal cloud, although local mist of fog patches are expected overnight, towards dawn and during early morning.

    Light gentle northeasterly to northwesterly winds will be blowing during nights and early mornings, while gentle to moderate southeasterly to south westerly breezes will prevail in the afternoons.

    The state of sea will be smooth to slight overnight and during the morning and generally slight in the afternoon.

    Maximum temperature 24 to 25 C inland, 22 to 23 C over the east and south coasts, 20 to 21 C over the west and north coasts and 17 to 18 C over Prodromos.

    Minimum temperature 10 to 11 inland and over the coasts and 8 to 9 over Prodromos.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 31/03/2005 to 01/04/2005 ------------------------------- No significant change is expected, but risk of isolated showers mainly over mountains in the afternoon.

    Partly cloudy at times on Friday, with local showers expected. Risk of isolated thunderstorms.

    Temperature is expected to fall.

    Cypriot government aware of content of Turkey's protocol

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the government is aware, and has been for a few days now, of the content of the protocol extending Turkey's customs union to the ten new EU member-states, including Cyprus, which the European Commission has sent to Ankara with a note that it must be signed before October 3, 2005, when Turkey is set to commence negotiations for accession to the EU.

    Ukraine supports speedy solution in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- The Ukraine would like to see the question of Cyprus resolved soon and the country reunified, the country's Ambassador here Borys Humeniuk has said.

    He also said that Cyprus is the largest foreign investor in the Ukraine, an official press release said here today.

    Auditing commission to be set up in EAC case

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- Cyprus Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister George Lillikas has announced that an auditing commission will be set up in the next two to three days to carry out an internal investigation within the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC).

    The investigations are connected to irregular dealings an investment company, Suphire, is said to have carried out while it managed the EAC pension fund, amounting to 9.2 million pounds, which went missing.

    Cyprus Foreign Minister to visit Jordan

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou flies to Jordan on Tuesday for a two-day visit during which he will discuss, among other issues, bilateral ties following Cyprus' accession to the European Union.

    The visit takes place at the invitation of Jordanian Foreign Minister Hani al-Mulki in the framework of visits by Cypriot government officials to the region after the Republic joined the EU in May last year.

    Iacovou will also discuss relations between Amman and Brussels as well as regional issues, primarily the Middle East question.
