  • [01] PRESIDENT - CHINA

Expressing his feelings of deep sorrow, sympathy and solidarity with the people of China, President of Cyprus Republic Demetris Christofias signed today the book of condolences for the earthquake victims, at the embassy of China in Nicosia.

I am here today to express sincere feelings of deep sorrow, love and solidarity to a people who always support Cyprus. We too have suffered disasters - not natural disasters - but we have experienced invasion, continuing occupation and the tragedy that has inflicted our country, Christofias stressed, referring to the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

The President conveyed by the phone the deep sorrow of the Cypriot people to the people of China for this immense disaster and the loss of thousands of people.

    [02] CMP - WEBSITE

The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) has announced the launch of the Greek and Turkish versions of its website at http://www.cmpcyprus.org, with a view to facilitate the access of both the Greek-speaking and the Turkish-speaking Cypriots to information pertaining to the activities of the CMP.

CMP, a tripartite committee comprising representatives of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities and a UN appointed representative, is involved in a process of exhumation and identification of remains of missing persons in Cyprus. It was set up in the early 1980s and in the recent past it has stepped up its work to help resolve this humanitarian issue.

``The Committee hopes that the website will encourage individuals in possession of any information concerning the whereabouts of Greek Cypriot or Turkish Cypriot persons missing since 1964 or 1974 to come forward,`` it says in a press release.

It adds that, ``following the launch of the English version last December, this step completes the efforts undertaken by the CMP to be more accessible to the people on behalf of whom it is carrying out its project on the exhumation, identification and return of missing persons in Cyprus, as well as to the media and the donor community.``

``The Committee will strive to continuously improve the website in accordance with the feedback received by visitors,`` it concludes.

Hundreds of Greek Cypriots combatants, women and children - went missing during the summer of 1974 when Turkish troops invaded. Many were last seen alive in the hands of the Turkish military.

Turkish Cypriots are listed as missing since the inter-communal fighting in the early 1960s, soon after the Republic was established.

    [03] MINISTER - OIL PRICES

Cyprus Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis said the Cyprus government would try to find ways to alleviate economic repercussions due to the increase in oil and electricity prices.

In statements after his arrival from Kiev where he attended the 17th Annual Meeting of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Stavrakis said that during his visit he had the chance to meet with officials of the Ukrainian Government

Stavrakis said that Ukrainian officials assured him that there is no intention of including Cyprus in the countrys tax black list.

He added that Ukraine and Cyprus would sign an agreement to avoid double taxation for the benefit of both countries.

    [04] DOCTORS - EVENT

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot doctors will meet on Thursday over dinner at a joint event, organised by the bicommunal association Doctors for Cyprus.

A press release, issued by the association, says that this social encounter aims to contribute to efforts for cooperation between Cypriot scientists in health matters, in prevention and in dealing with humanitarian issues.

The meeting also aims to help the effort to reunite Cyprus and to secure a common peaceful homeland for the generations to come.

Scientists, over and beyond any feelings of hatred and conflict, in the medical profession have always been able to circumvent dividing lines and promote joint programmes to treat illness and human pain, the press release adds.

The association notes that some of these joint programmes are already underway and they will be discussed further at Thursdays meeting.

The doctors meet as teams of experts from the islands two communities continue to meet to discuss day to day concerns as well as core issues relating to the Cyprus question.
