  • [01] POWER SUPPLY OCCUPIED AREAS

Power supply from the northern Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus to the southern government controlled areas will continue for six more months, after Cyprus main power plant in Vassiliko, was badly damaged following a blast of munitions in the nearby Naval Base Evaggelos Florakis, in July.

The agreement was signed Monday by associate of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, economist Costas Apostolides, as a private individual and provider and is based on the EU Council Green Line Regulation, which entered into force on 1 May 2004 and defines the terms under which provisions of EU law apply to the movement of persons, goods and services across the Line between the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus and the government controlled part of the country.

In statements to CNA, Apostolides said that an agreement was signed Friday between himself, as a private individual and provider, and the Electricity Authority Cyprus (EAC), while yesterday another agreement was signed between himself and the so-called Turkish Cypriot electricity authority.

Apostolides said that the agreement provides for the supply of electricity for six months, until February 2012. The daily available power from the occupied areas could reach 120 MW, depending on electricity needs as well as on availability.

The cost is expected to be lower than the cost of the first agreement signed right after the tragic events at the Naval Base, since it was signed based on a different formula.

    [02] EUROSTAT CYPRIOT GDP INCREASES

Cyprus` GDP increased by 0.4% in the second quarter of 2011, compared with Q1, whereas Euro area GDP and EU27 increased by 0.2%.

According to Eurostat`s second estimates for Q2, released today, the Cypriot GDP grew by 0.4% in Q2 compared with zero growth in Q1 of 2011.

On the other hand, the Euro area and EU 27 GDP decelerated since it increased only by 0.2% compared to the Q1 GDP rise of 0.8% and 0.7% in the Euro area and the EU27 respectively.

On yearly basis (second quarter 2010), Cyprus GDP increased by 1.4%, whereas Euro area GDP rose by 1.6% and EU27 by 1.7%.

    [03] UNEMPLOYMENT INCREASE

The unemployed persons, registered at the District Labour Offices by the end of August 2011, reached 26.657 persons, marking an increase of 4.292 persons or 19.2% compared to August 2010.

According to the Statistical Service, based on the seasonally adjusted data that shows the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for August 2011 increased to 28.328 persons in comparison to 27.804 in the previous month.

It said that in comparison with August 2010, an increase of 4.292 persons or 19.2% was recorded which was mainly observed in the sectors of trade (an increase of 1.191 unemployed persons), construction (an increase of 781), public administration (an increase of 425), manufacturing (an increase of 393), transportation and storage (an increase of 267), accommodation and food service activities (an increase of 165), as well as to newcomers in the labour market where an increase of 851 unemployed persons was recorded.
