  • [01] House commemorates Mari blast

The House of Representatives marked Thursday the 2nd anniversary of a deadly blast at the "Evangelos Florakis" naval base, near Mari village in the District of Larnaca, by observing one minute's silence in honour of the 13 persons killed during the massive explosion.

Addressing the House plenary, its President Yiannakis Omirou said that the state should pay tribute to those who perished as heroes.

To that extent, he welcomed a decision by the Cabinet to do just that, recalling that one year ago the House had unanimously passed a law in this respect.

[02] New Zealand hopes for early resumption of Cyprus talks in October, says FM

New Zealand hopes to see an early resumption of the Cyprus peace talks in October 2013 and hopes that these will see a renewed effort on both sides to find a mutually satisfactory way forward, New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully has said.

McCully was recently in Cyprus on a working visit and had meetings and consultations with President Nicos Anastasiades, House President Yiannakis Omirou and Cyprus FM Ioannis Kasoulides.

Invited by CNA to assess his visit, McCully said he now has a much better appreciation of the political and economic challenges facing this country.

"I can assure you that New Zealand is a friend of Cyprus and I will be leaving these shores with a very positive impression of the country and its people, and your innate abilities to overcome the challenges you face", he said.

On the Cyprus issue, he said that New Zealand has consistently and firmly supported United Nations efforts to find an enduring solution to end the almost 40 year partition of the country.

[03] Government to commemorate coup and Turkish invasion anniversaries

The victims of the 1974 military coup and the Turkish invasion that followed will be honoured during a special commemorative gathering next week at the Presidential Palace.

An official statement said "the state remembers and honours the victims of the national tragedy of 1974" and will "honour those who lost their lives during the coup d' état and the invasion at a somber ceremony at the Presidential Palace, on 18 July".

President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, will address the gathering.

[04] President: We now focus on solving problems caused by financial crisis

The focus of the government`s attention at this time is how it can address the multiple problems caused by the financial crisis, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades said on Wednesday, noting that the Cyprus issue was also a very important problem that needed to be addressed.

In his address at the inauguration of a Zivania Museum and the new offices of the Community Council of Vasa Kilaniou village, in the Limassol District on the south coast of Cyprus, President Anastasiades said that the upgrading of local administration and the utilization of the EU Structural Funds played a significant role in strengthening the relationship between central and local government.

He noted that the increase of Europe's contribution to the co-funded projects being implemented should be taken for granted, following the government's latest efforts and interventions.

The President said that attention and efforts should be turned in this direction for the more effective absorbance of the hundreds of millions of euros that are available.
