Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 03-01-27Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Monday, 27 January 2003CONTENTS[01] President Clerides meets British envoy on CyprusThe President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Glafcos Clerides, had a meeting this morning with Britain's Special Representative on Cyprus, Lord David Hannay, in the presence of the British High Commissioner to Cyprus, Mr. Lynn Parker, Cyprus' Foreign Minister, Mr. Ioannis Kasoulides, the Government Spokesman, Mr. Michalis Papapetrou, the Undersecretary to the President, Mr. Pantelis Kouros, and Mr. Alecos Markides, member of the negotiating team for the solution of the Cyprus problem.After the meeting, the Government Spokesman made the following statement: "The President of the Republic had a meeting today with Lord Hannay, during which there was a review of the latest developments on the Cyprus problem and UN efforts to move the process forward and lead things towards a solution of the Cyprus problem. During the meeting, the President of the Republic reiterated our side's determination to pursue a solution that secures the basic parameters of the aspirations of the Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, which we consider necessary for a solution in Cyprus to function properly". Asked to say what message Lord Hannay conveyed to President Clerides, Mr. Papapetrou noted, "He conveyed the message that, on the one hand, he assesses positively the way in which the Greek Cypriot side acts politically, but, on the other hand, time limits are pushing, and efforts to open the way to a solution should be multiplied, clearly implying - in my judgment - Mr. Denktash and not Mr. Clerides. [02] Washington supports EU Donors' Conference for CyprusThe US State Department's Spokesman, Mr. Richard Boucher, stated in a press release that Washington was supporting the EU initiative to organise an international donors' conference for Cyprus, with a view to providing financial support in the context of a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.The press release, issued on 23 January 2003, reads as follows: "The United States welcomes the announcement [today] that the European Commission is ready to organize an international donors' conference to provide financial support in the context of a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question. We fully support such an international effort under the leadership of the European Union. We agree with the Commissioner for Enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, that, at this decisive time, it is important for the international community to send a clear signal of solidarity with the people of Cyprus. The United States is prepared to participate in such a conference and to contribute financially. We further stand ready to provide support and expertise to a "needs assessment" effort in Cyprus as the first step in preparing a donors' conference and in support of the United Nations Secretary-General's Good Offices Mission." [03] UN-led direct peace talks continueThe President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Glafcos Clerides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Rauf Denktash, had another meeting last Friday, in the presence of the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Mr. Alvaro de Soto.The meeting took place in the context of the UN-led direct talks for reaching an agreement on a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, on the basis of the revised UN solution plan, submitted by the Secretary- General on 10 December 2002. Their next meeting will take place this afternoon.
