    NEWS ITEMS

[01] Denktash warns UNSC members prior to 17 April meeting

According to Anatolia agency (15:00 hours, 16.4.96), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has warned the UN Security Council prior to its meeting to be held today, 17.4.96.

In a statement to the Anatolia Agency, Denktash claimed once again that the proposal made by President Glafcos Clerides on disarmament is aimed at eliminating the guarantee and alliance agreements.

Denktash recalled Greek Cypriot press reports saying that Russia will be defending President Clerides' disarmament proposal at the meeting of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council in New York today in a bid to resolve the issue, and alleged that Russia's behaviour is shameful from the viewpoint of humanity and justice.

Referring to Greek Cypriot statements saying that they will not renounce their struggle until Turkish occupation troops are withdrawn from the island, Denktash claimed: "They are, thus, rejecting bizonality because so long as a bizonal federation is not based on the sovereignty of the two sides Turkish Cypriot rights cannot go further than scribbling on sand. This is the reason for their armament".

Stressing that the Greek Cypriots will under no circumstances be accepted as the legitimate government, Denktash continued:

"I would not like to comment on proposals that will be taken up in our absence before I see them. I do not believe that a new package of proposals full of surprises will be submitted. The Cyprus problem concerns the two communities. This problem can be solved if the two sides are treated equally. If this is not done, then the Greek Cypriot administration, being under the impression that their position is secure, will continue on their own path and will advance toward new disasters."

[02] Turkish Cypriot clandestine organization says is against federation, "Cyprus is Turkish"

HALKIN SESI (17.4.96) reports that yesterday it received by post a letter signed by "Turkish Freedom Brigade" in which this clandestine organization claims that its slogan is "Cyprus is and will remain Turkish", that it is against a federal solution and that it has taken over the duty from the shameful nationalists.

The paper says that the letter claimed that the occupied area was not without a protector.

It says that with the spirit of the terrorist organization TMT it will start to fulfil its duties. (MY)

[03] British professor says Britain did not fulfil its guarantorship obligations

According to KIBRIS (17.4.96) the Director of the European Research Centre of Keele University, Prof. Brewin, has claimed that in 1974, when the Greek colonels organized a coup in Cyprus, Britain did not fulfil its guarantorship obligations.

"Had Britain accepted Ecevit's proposal for a joint intervention, the Cyprus problem would have been settled", Prof. Brewin said.

Speaking at a conference organized jointly by the so-called Lefka University in the occupied area and the European Research Centre on "The European Union - Turkey and Cyprus", Prof. Brewin referred to Cyprus' application for full EU membership and Turkey's Customs Union with the EU and said that nobody knows how long the intergovernmental conference of the EU will last.

He also supported Turkey's membership to the EU. (MY)

[04] Hungarian doctor honoured by the pseudostate

According to VATAN (17.4.96) Hungarian Doctor, Mrs Edit Erdei, has been honoured with a plaquette for her services for the development of sports in the occupied area.

Dr Edit Erdei tried to help sports services in the occupied area while she was employed at the Hungarian Ministry of Sports.

VATAN reports that Dr Erdei is in the occupied area for a scientific conference. (MY)

[05] Illegal BRTK's draft budget approved

According to KIBRIS (17.4.96) the so-called Assembly of the illegal regime convened yesterday and approved illegal Bayrak Radio Television Corporation BRTK's draft budget. The 414 billion 510 TL budget was approved by a majority vote. (Tr. Note: CY 1 155,000 TL)

[06] Japanese and American artists give recitals in the occupied area

According to KIBRIS (17.4.96) the Japanese artist Hideko Udagawa and American pianist Judith Olson will be giving violin-piano recitals in the occupied area on 17 and 19 April.

KIBRIS reports that the first recital will be held in occupied Famagusta and the second in Bellapais. (MY)
