[02] Forty five persons wanted in Turkey for relations with FETO "arested" in the breakaway regime

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (29.07.18) reported that 45 persons, 19 men, 9 women and 17 children who were wanted in Turkey for relation with the FETO organization were "arrested" at a boat which was getting ready to sail for Greece. The boat was located in a marina yacht in occupied Keryneia.

The paper wrote that "a three-day warrant was issued" for the arrested persons.

Reporting on the same issue and noting that the "arrests" were a "great success", Volkan (30.07.18) writes that during a press conference he gave on July 13, the "ambassador of Turkey to Cyprus" Derya Kanbay said that many members of FETO went to the occupied area of Cyprus to hide and "arrests" towards them were on the way. [03] Ataoglu says discussions are under way to create a new "national carrier"

Under the title "Govt in talks to create new national carrier, slash fares", Turkish Cypriot weekly Cyprus Today newspaper (28.07.18) reported that self-styled minister of tourism and environment minister Fikri Ataoglu, speaking to the paper, said: "Discussions are under way between the government and a trio of airlines to create a new national carrier and slash air fares to and from Ercan airport [occupied airport of Tymbou]". He explained that airline bosses would visit the occupied area of Cyprus in the next few days to talk about taxes, tariffs and increasing the number of existing flights.

Ataoglu further said: "We are currently speaking to three airlines, including Turkish Airlines, over formation of a private-public airline. (…) it is indeed the dream of every Turkish Cypriot to see the rebirth of a national carrier for North Cyprus, so we are discussing how we can bring it to life and how it will operate".

Meanwhile, the paper reports that Turkish Airlines (THY) this week increased the number of its daily flights from seven to eight after Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci informed visiting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of problems being faced by the tourism industry in the occupied area of Cyprus.

[04] More than 4,000 unfinished constructions in the breakaway regime

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (30.07.18) reports that there are around 4,000 unfinished buildings in the breakaway regime as a result of unplanned constructions and investments that were not under control.

The paper, which notes that "the country is full of concrete chunks", writes that no-one knows the exact numbers of the buildings the construction of which started after the Annan Plan period, mainly between 2004-2007 and adds that 4,000 is just an estimation since there is no official data by the "government" for the exact numbers of the unfinished buildings. In the period that followed, between 2007-2011 and while the hopes for a solution were fainted as well, the works of the constructions stopped leaving the "country" with unfinished houses and apartments.

Commenting on the issue, Cafer Gurcafer, the chairman of the "Turkish Cypriot Constructors' Union" said that the unfinished buildings belong to foreign investors and firms like Gary Robb or Bulut Insaat which were not able to follow the "alternation of laws" regarding the buildings and abandoned their investments. He also added that measures must be taken towards for fixing the problem.

[01] Erdogan: Turkey 'won't take step back' against US

According to Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (29.07.18, http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-wont-take-step-back-against-us-135166), the spat between Turkey and the United States over imprisoned American pastor Andrew Brunson and the threats of sanctions coming from Washington "will not intimidate Turkey", Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

"You [the U.S] cannot make Turkey take a step back through sanctions", he told reporters in Zambia before returning to Ankara, referring to statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and the U.S. Defence Ministry.

The latest remarks from Washington amount to "psychological warfare," according to Erdogan.

"In my opinion, these are all [parts of] psychological warfare," he said.

On July 26, both Trump and Pence threatened Turkey with "sanctions" if Brunson, who was given house arrest on July 25 after staying behind bars for nearly two years on terrorism charges, was not freed. (…)

The President said Turkey may seek to resort to international arbitration if the sale of the F-35 jets to Ankara is blocked. "If it comes to that point, there are alternatives," he said. "We will continue with patience. But it should not be forgotten that we are not living in a world without alternatives," he said. (…)

"If the U.S. does not change this attitude they should not forget they will lose a sincere and strong partner like Turkey," he added.

Referring to the reports, which alleged a deal, had been brokered between Turkey and the U.S. for the release of Turkish national Ebru Ozkan from an Israeli prison in return for the release of Brunson, Erdogan said Turkey "had never made Brunson a subject of bargain". (…)

"We told the Americans they could help Ebru, who was released and is not guilty, and facilitate her return to Turkey by giving her back her passport," said the President. "But we never said we would give them Brunson in return," Erdogan added. (…)

[02] Turkey to convene summit to take up regional issues with Russia, Germany, France

According to Turkish daily Sabah newspaper (29.07.18, https://www.dailysabah.com/diplomacy/2018/07/29/turkey-to-convene-summit-to-take-up-regional-issues-with-russia-germany-france), President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking to reporters early Saturday in Johannesburg after the BRICS summit in South Africa, said that the summit on Syria and the wider region scheduled for Sept. 7 in Istanbul will be attended by the most senior representatives of Russia, France and Germany. (…)

The meetings in Istanbul and Ankara will allow Russian President Vladimir Putin and himself to maintain a proper channel of communication with respect to Syria, Erdogan said. "We had the opportunity to discuss Syria on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in South Africa. I asked him [Putin] to take the necessary precautions against the possible regime attacks on Idlib, which we would find unacceptable. As you know, we have established 12 military observation posts around Idlib". (…)

The Istanbul summit on Sept. 7 will allow all four countries to take up a wide-ranging set of issues, including Iraq, he said, while noting that the Syria-focused Tehran meeting was the continuation of the Astana process. (…)

[03] Erdogan calls on the leaders of the five-country block BRICS to let Turkey join the group

Under the title "Erdogan suggests adding 'T' to BRICS", Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (29.07.18, http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/erdogan-suggests-adding-t-to-brics-135160?News) reports that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on the leaders of the five-country block BRICS to let Turkey join the group. "If you take us in the name of the platform would become BRICST, I said," he told reporters in South Africa's capital Johannesburg on July 27.

The BRICS group, made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, invited Turkey to 10th annual meeting as the term chair of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Erdogan travelled to Johannesburg along with the country's Foreign Minister, Finance and Treasury Minister, Defense Minister, Commerce Minister and ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) officials on July 26.

Erdogan also said that the BRICS members welcomed his suggestion warmly. "Especially China says that it stands in favour of enlargement. I have seen that they are considering involving other countries in this platform. They are not opposed to it," he said.

"We are in the G-20 with five of those countries. I wish they take the necessary steps to let us in and we take our place in the BRICS," he added.

Pointing to the potential of partnering in economy, investments and development projects with the BRICS countries, Erdogan said: "I believe that it is not right to stay away from such groupings".
