From: Theodore Zarros Subject: News (in ENGLISH)- Tue, 5 Apr 1994 (Greek Press Office BBS, Ottawa). Athens News Agency Bulletin, Greece to thwart Turkish 'artificial tension' attempts ------------------------------------------------------- Athens, 5/4/1994 (ANA): Greece will not be drawn into "the climate of artificial tension" which "certain circles" in Turkey are trying to create, government spokesman Evangelos Venizelos said yesterday. The spokesman was replying to press questions on statements by Istanbul's newly-elected Islamist mayor that he would make "a triumphant entry into the Ecumenical Patriarchate through the sealed gate" where Patriarch Grigorios V was hanged on April 10, 1 821, Easter Sunday. Mr. Venizelos attributed the efforts by certain circles in Turkey to create tension to domestic factors, and warned that the Greek minority in Istanbul was protected by international law and, in particular, by the provisions of the Treaty of Lausanne. The spokesman said that the international status of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul was ensured by "both tradition and international law". He said that the Ecumenical Patriarch was received "with the appropriate honours" by foreign states and international institutions such as the European Parliament. On relations between Turkey and Europe, Mr. Venizelos said that "Europe means a specific culture; it means achievements and respect for human rights, as well as a climate and human behaviour which Turkey must strive for". Greece, "a bridge between the US and the Balkans" - US envoy ----------------------------------------------------------- Athens, 5/4/1994 (ANA): "We are ready to play a constructive role finding in a solution to Greek-FYROM problems ... I am optimistic that the so-called Macedonian issue will be solved very soon in a climate of good neighbourliness", said German ambassador to Athens Leopold Bredov, speaking at a business conference focusing on Northern Greece and the Balkans yesterday. Mr Bredov rejected the view that his country had any interest in causing the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia. American ambassador Thomas Niles, also a contributor at the conference, described Greece as a bridge between the US and the Balkans, adding that "there are comparative advantages to channelling funds to the Balkans through Greece". Alternate National Economy Minister Yiannos Papantoniou said "the government is proceeding with drawing up a comprehensive programme of development and support to Greek business activity in the Balkans and the Black Sea, that will include the country's business aims according to branch, sector and area of economic activity, as well as the means for their attainment". Macedonia and Thrace Minister Costas Triarides said the economic development of the region, which was of top priority, was the country's best shield against Turkish pressure. In that context, the settlement of relations and co-operation with Skopje was a secondary priority", he added. Greek and Cyprus parliamentary delegations hold Athens talks ------------------------------------------------------------ Athens, 5/4/1994 (ANA): A Cypriot Parliamentary delegation headed by House President Alexis Galanos held successive talks in Athens yesterday with Greek House President Apostolos Kaklamanis and Alternate Foreign Minister responsible for European Affairs Theodore Pangalos. Mr. Kaklamanis said the issues of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Cyprus are top priorities for Greece, adding that in the case of Cyprus, a solution should restore the independence and unity of the island-republic. Mr. Galanos stressed the need for joint diplomatic efforts between Cyprus and Greece in international fora, adding problems faced by Athens and Nicosia were due to the hypocritical mentality prevailing on the international scene, which goes so far as to even depict Turkey as a dove sending peacekeepers to Bosnia. Interior Minister reminds Skopje survival hinges on Greece ---------------------------------------------------------- Athens, 5/4/1994 (ANA): Interior Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos yesterday said Skopje should realise its survival hinged on Greece's support. "We can guarantee its survival if it abandons its irredentist designs and the illusion that it can survive without Greece's support," Mr. Tsohatzopoulos said. He was addressing a conference in Thessaloniki themed "Northern Greece and the Balkans - Time for Entrepreneurial Action." Referring to the situation in the Balkans, Mr. Tsohatzopoulos noted Turkey's intentions to make dramatic interventions in the region.
