    [01] Tension escalating in FYROM

    Tension is escalating dangerously in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, following the death of five Skopjen soldiers near Tetovo last Tuesday from Albanian extremists. Clashes between Slavo-Macedonians also took place last night in the town of Bitola, where three of the dead soldiers came from.

    According to eyewitnesses during the clashes three people were injured and 25 shops belonging to Albanians were set on fire. Tension culminated when unknown gunmen shot from a car with Bulgarian number plates against the President's office, without however putting his life in danger.

    However, the government spokesman described the incident as a terrorist act.

    In the meantime, Prime minister Lioupsko Georgefsky's intention to declare FYROM in a state of war, was met with the reaction of the European Union, since such a development would be for the benefit of the extremists. In tandem, the Swedish Presidency asked from the FYROM government to take all necessary military measures so that no civilians would loose their life.

    [02] Rumsfeld recognizes Greece's leading role in the Balkans

    Following his meeting with National Defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos on the sidelines of the two-day informal meeting of South-eastern European Defence ministers in Thessaloniki, his American counterpart Donald Rumsfeld recognized in public Greece's leading role in the Balkans.

    Mr. Tsochatzopoulos also met with his Turkish counterpart Sabahattin Cakmakoglu, accepting Mr. Cakmakglu's invitation to visit Ankara in September within the framework of the armaments exhibition "Defendory 2001".

    [03] Bill on organized crime approved

    The discussion on the articles of the bill against organized crime continued in Parliament yesterday in the absence of deputies of the Greek Communist party and the Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress party and amid disagreements among PASOK deputies.

    The bill was approved by majority up to article 5.

    In the meantime, the Greek department of Amnesty International expressed its concern over the civilians' rights through a letter to Justice minister Michalis Stathopoulos in the case the bill was adopted.

    [04] Legalisation process for immigrants continues

    The legalisation process of the 400.000 immigrants living in Greece began yesterday with long queues of applicants outside the special centres of the Organisations of the Local Administration.

    In the meantime, Interior minister Vaso Papandreou warned that after the deadline for the submission of the immigrants' recquired documents ended, any immigrants caught without the necessary documents would be extradited.

    [05] Simitis on a private visit to Berlin

    Prime minister Costas Simitis began a three-day private visit to Berlin yesterday. Mr. Simitis, who is accompanied by his wife and a small number of associates, will be hosted a dinner by Chancellor Gerhard Shroeder this evening.

    Although there is no agenda for the discussions to take place, the two men are going to discuss about European issues in view of the European Union summit meeting in Goetemborgh next week.

    [06] Industrialists say Greek economy is on a good course

    The President of the Greek Industrialists Union Lefteris Antonakopoulos described the course of the Greek economy as positive, underlining however that the pace for the materialization of structural changes should be accelerated.

    [07] Papantoniou appears certain about the success of the 2004 Olympics

    National Economy minister Yiannos Papantoniou appeared certain regarding the success of the 2004 Olympics at the pondium of the meeting of the "Athens 2004' sponsors. From his side, the Marketting Manager of the International Olympics Committee Michael Pane stressed that substancial progress should take place in all sectors.

    [08] Ten-digit numbers for telephones

    6.000.000 telephone numbers in Greece will change as of next month and will consist of ten digits due to the lack of telephone numbers.

    [09] Papandreou stresses the importance for Cyprus' accession to the EU

    During his speech at a meeting organized by Pantion University yesterday, Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou described the next two years as crucial for the Cyprus issue and Greek-Turkish relations.

    In the meantime, briefing the Parliamentary committee of Foreign Affairs yesterday, Mr. Papandreou underlined the importance for Cyprus to be placed in the front line in the accession process to the European Union.

    The Foreign minister reiterated that Greece would not agree with the European Union's expansion if Cyprus were not be included.

    [10] Greek reports for inhumane conditions in Turkish prisons

    Representatives of the Lawyers' Union of Athens, the Federation of Judge Employees and the Panhellenic Union of Architects, who visited Constaninople recently, gave a press conferrence yesterday during which they referred to the existing inhumane conditions in Turkish prisons and the attempts made to threaten the prisoners' relatives as well as the violation of justice and humanitarianism by the Turkish government.

    [11] Black economy holds 36,7% of the GDP

    According to the study of the Institute of Economic and Industrial Research publicized yesterday, 36,7% of the Gross Domestic Product is attributed to black economy.

    The study, which was prepared by a number of Professors headed by Professor of Pantion University Nikos Tsatsos, points out that black economy in Greece is higher in comparison to other European Union countries.

    Special reference is also made to illegal employment and tax evasion, phenomena which according to the study are related to black economy.

    [12] More than 350 beaches win the Blue Flag

    According to the representatives of the Greek Society for the Protection of Nature, who gave a press conference yesterday, more than 350 beaches won the Green Flag this year, a development that places Greece in the third position among 21 European states as regards the cleanness of its beaches and the quality of the services offerred.

    [13] Fire breaks out on Greek vessel

    Fire broke out in the Greek passenger ship "Arethousa" as it was sailing off the Italian coasts with 531 passengers and 111 crew members on board on its way to the port of Patras in southern Greece. The fire broke out in the ship's engine room control panel and was caused by a short circuit. Shortly afterwards, the fire was put out by crew members.

    However, the ship's engines were turned off and the ship was left adrift as its crew was trying to fix the failure. The passengers were at no risk, whatsoever, throughout the incident.

    As it was made known, the ship is now being towed to the port of Bari in Italy escorted by Italian Coast Guard vessels.

    [14] 0,27% drop in the Athens Stock Exchange yesterday

    The General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange dropped yesterday by 0,27% closing at 2.902,83 points.
