The decision of the Peartikos group to close the shipbuilding unit in Elefsina, near Athens created a strong political problem since about 2100 employees are going to be left outside work. The unit was privatised in 1992 and since them the unit got about 15 billion drachmas debts mainly to the Greek state.
The government proposed the clearing of the the company, a suggestion which was not accepted by the union of the employees who did not exclude the eventuality that they occypy the industry.
Prime Minister mr Andreas Papandreou said that his government aims at the reopening of the unit while the opposition leader mr Miltades Evert said that his party has a solution that can be applied tomorrow morning and added that the 1992 privatization under ND governments was good.
Greek Justice Minister mr Anastassios Peponis continued today his visit in Tirana which receives great coverage by the Albanian press as it is the first ever visit by a Greek Justice Minister in Albania.
In Tirana the government and the opposition regard the agreement to be signed by the two parties as very important as it will promote the cooperation in the field of justice. The agreement has to do with the execution of court decisions in both parties and as a daily writes today in Tirana the criminality of Albanian coitizens in Greece is very high since about 2000 Albanians are held in Greek prisons.
Mr Peponis will be received in Tirana by President Berisha and Prime Minister Mexi, before returning to Athens.
Greek foreign minister mr Carolos Papoulias decsribed today the situation in the Balkans as "changeable" and added that there are efforts towards a solution to the crisis after the new initiative by the "contact group".
Mr Papoulias stressed the role Greece can play in the area and expressed the hope that regarding Cossovo Tirana and Belgrade will be sangfroid as far as it concerns the settlement of serb refugees from Krajina.
The US President advisor George Stephanopoulos in an interview to the greek-speaking newspaper "Proini" in New York insinuated that the greek-FYROM relations will normalize as did the greekalbanian relations.
Responding to the question if President Clinton shares the same optimism expressed recently by mr.Nimetz regarding the solution of the problem, mr.Stephanopoulos, who is of Greek origin, said that US "believe we are very close to the solution of the problem and added that there is such a political will in FYROM and in Greece.
Mr Stephanopoulos stressed that the solution can be achieved to satisfy the interests of both countries and added that the United States want the greek government to continue the improvement of its relations with its neighbours and that the US government will continue to push for a just settlement of the differencies with Skopje.
Referring to the greek-turkish relations he underlined that the US government wants to encourage the governments in Athens and Ankara to promote peaceful, diplomatic and economic relations between them, adding that the decrease of the tensions in their relations will be not only to their benefit but to the benefit of all the NATO countries and the United States.
Responding to the question if during his upcoming visit to the region he will deliver a message by President Clinton to the governments in Greece, Turkey and Cyprus, he said that the message is that the US government wants to improve its relations with the three countries and also the relations between them and underlined that President Clinton is determined to push for a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem.
Mr.Stephanopoulos will arrive in Nicosia from Ankara via Athens on Monday, August 21st.
In the turkish capital he will have contacts with the country's government while during his visit to Cyprus he will meet with Cypriot President Kliridis. Mr.Stephanopoulos is also expected to meet and with turkish-cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. After the talks in Cyprus mr.Stephanopoulos will go to Athens for contacts with the greek government.
Greek Finance Minister Mr Alexandros Papadopoulos will visit Albania in early September according to the albanian newspapers which mention that the visit is expected with great interest by the albanian government as it will mark a new era in the economic cooperation between the two countries.

The US aircraft carrier "Roosevelt" arrived in the area where a US helicopter crashed last night near the coasts of Cyprus to participate in the efforts for the location of the four missing crew members.
Parts of the helicopter were located in the sea about 3 miles from Cape Penunta east of Zigio in Cyprus.
The helicopter had taken off from the Akrotiri Base and was going to Larnaka to pick up passengers for Beirut, Lebanon. The helicopter was on a routine flight carrying diplomatic documents, mail and members of diplomatic missions.
Cypriot government spokesman, Yiannakis Kasoulidis stated that the permission for the flights of the US helicopters had been issued during the crisis in Lebanon for the servicing of the US embassy in Beirut, while he added that yesterday's flight had no relation with the military exercise taking place in the international waters south of Cyprus.

The Economist Intelligence Unit in its report on the greek economy, issued every three months, presents its positive course underlining that "it hadn't been in a better state during the past years".
