    [01] GREEK POLITICAL LEADERSHIP CONDEMS ATTACK AGAINST GLIGOROV

    Greek Prime MInister mr Andreas Papandreou expressed today in a message to President Gligorov of FYROM his deep sympathy and the sincere wishes of the Greek government for a quick recovery. Mr Papandreou stresses that terroristic actions can not hinder the efforts for the strenthening of the stability in the area.

    Greek government spokesman Tilemachos Hitiris expressed the greek government's wishes for the quick recovery of President Gligorov while the ex- Prime Minister mr Constantinos Mitsotakis expresed his happiness for the survival of the President.

    Vice - President of the main opposition party of New Democracy mr Yannis Varvichiotis condemned the attempt and added that in case it was successful the problem would have been greater.

    [02] GREEK DOCTORS TO SCOPJE FOR THE OPERATION ON PRESIDENT GLIGOROV

    A group of Greek doctors have already left by plane from Thessaloniki for Scopje after the FYROM government accepted a offer by the Greek government that they help in the operation on President Gligorov who had suffered an assasination attack.

    The head of the team, is professor Foroglou of neurosurgery and he is accompanied by fellow neurosurgeons Christos Antoniadis and Panagiotis Selviaridis, anaesthisiologist Efthimios Sofianos and traumatiologist Stephanos Triaridis.

    The offer for help has been made by the head of the greek deligation in the Athens -Scopje negotiations in Athens ambassador Kipreos to the FYROM deligation under vice foreign minister mr Lubco Arsovski.

    Minister for Macedonia - Thrace mr Constantinos Triaridis said at the airport of Thessaloniki at the departure of the team that Greece realised that ther was a problem and expressed his hope that everything will go on well.

    [03] GREEK - FYROM NEGOTIATIONS CONTINUE DESPITE ASSASINATION

    The negotiations between Greece and FYROM that opened this morning in the Foreign Ministry building in Athens continue despite the assassination attempt on FYROM's President mr Kiro Gligorov that was made this morning in the center of the city of Scopje.

    The negotiations are taking place in the framework of the preparations for the implementation of the interim agreement that was signed in New York on September 13th by the Foreign Ministers of Greece and FYROM.

    The greek government and opposition expressed satisfaction and relief for the failure of the assassination attempt and in a statement issued by who was seriously injured in the assassination attempt while his driver was killed as a result of a bomb blast. The bomb had been placed in a parked car and was detonated possibly through remote control as the President's car was passing next to it.

    Head of the greek delegation participating in the greek - FYROM talks is Ambassador mr. Kipreos while the 8member FYROM delegation is headed by Lubco Arsovski, assistant Foreign Minister and last Consul General of the Yugoslav Federation in Thessaloniki.

    The negotiations at this phase focus on practical issues which must be resolved by October 14th when the implementation of the interim agreement will be put into effect while the greek embargo against Skopje will be lifted.

    According to information, the negotiations will continue and tomorrow and will focus on technical issues while will be also discussed the process for the opening of diplomatic offices in Athens and Scopje and ways for the free movement of goods and individuals to and from both countries.

    The greek proposals provide that all the documents entering Greece will bear the stamp with the indication "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" replacing the indication "Republic of Macedonia". Meanwhile, in Scopje began the gradual change of the automobile number plates from which was removed the indication "R.M." while in the next few days FYROM will change its flag removing the ancient greek symbol of the Sun of Vergina.

    In the negotiations is also expected to be raised the issue of the 42 thousand tons of crude oil that were destined for Scopje but were blocked in the customs office of Idomeni and were returned to Thessaloniki after the greek economic countermeasures were imposed on Scopje on February 16th, 1994.

    FYROM closed its borders with all the neighbouring countries Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Albania after the assassination attempt on Skopjan President Kiro Gligorov that took place this morning in the center of the city of Skopje.

    Is unknown for how long the borders will remain closed as the decision was made for security reasons aiming at trapping the perpetrators on FYROM's territory.

    [04] INDUSTRY MINISTERS OF THE BALKAN STATES TO MEET IN THESSALONIKI

    An informal meeting of the Balkan states' Industry and Energy Ministers will be held in Thessaloniki on October 16th and 17th. The meeting will take place in the framework of the Conference organized by the EU Directorate General on Energy on the issue of the link-up of Balkan gas, oil and electricity networks.

    The meeting will be attended by representatives of energy companies and industries and also by representatives of credit organizations. Greece will be represented in the conference's organizing committee by high government officials, University Professors and business executives.

    In Thessaloniki are expected to arrive the Industry Ministers of Bulgaria and Romania while is certain the participation of the Albanian Industry Minister.

    [05] GREEK EURODEPUTY CALLED FOR EMERGENCY AID TO TURKEY QUAKE VICTIMS

    Motion for the adoption of an urgent resolution by the European Parliament was submitted today by greek Eurodeputy Alekos Alavanos providing for humanitarian aid to be sent to the quake striken region of Dinar in southeastern Turkey.

    In the draft resolution is mentioned that the political differencies between the European Union and the turkish government concerning the issue of human rights should not be an obstacle for the humanitarian activities of the European Union that can help the tragic victims of the devastating earthquake in the turkish province of Dinar.

    The draft resolution also calls for humanitarian aid in food, medicine and tents and EU contribution to the compensations that will be received by the quake striken population. Also, it calls for the cooperation of the EU seismological centers with those in Turkey.

    Meanwhile, a group of greek doctors with the necessary medical equipment left yesterday for Turkey in order to participate in the efforts for the rescue of earthquake survivors still trapped under the rubble.

    [06] GREEK SPECIAL FORCES IN TURKEY FOR THE VICTIMS OF EARTHQUAKE

    Greek special forces experts on destructions arrived today in the city of Dinar in Southwest Turkey to help the victims of the earthquake which hit the city a few days ago.

    The team is in Turkey after an offer by the Greek government and after an approval was received by the Turkish authorities.

    [07] ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH VARTHOLOMEOS WILL MEET WITH CHIRAC IN PARIS

    Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos will meet with french President Jacques Chirac during his official visit to France on November 2-10 which is the first such visit by an Orthodox Church spiritual leader. The visit will take place after an initiative by the French Christian Churches Council.

    In France live about 150-200.000 Orthodox Christians and the Ecumenical Patriarch is scheduled to attend the Catholic Bishops' Synod which will be held on November 6th. The Ecumenical Patriarch's visit coincides with the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the St.Stephanos Cathedral in Paris.

    [08] EXHIBITION OF BRITISH PRODUCTS WILL OPEN IN ATHENS ON OCTOBER 5TH

    A milestone for the greek-british commercial and economic relations was characterized by the british Ambassador in Athens, Oliver Miles the exhibition under the title BEST OF BRITAIN that will be held in the Zappion Building in Athens on October 5-8.

    In a press conference held in the British Embassy, mr.Miles stated that the exhibition will be held in the framework of the british festival BRITAIN IN GREECE organized by the British Embassy in Athens, Thessaloniki and in other greek cities.

    The exhibition aims at presenting to the public characteristic samples of british products and also at promoting sectors of high quality services offered in Britain.

    The British Ambassador also stated that the exhibition aims at presenting the whole spectrum of british products and services so that its visitors will be able to form a complete picture of the modern british market through the best possible information on the economic business developments.
