  • [01] MOBILITY ON THE ISSUE OF THE FYROM NAME

    Athens, 15 November 2004 (13:21 UTC+2)

    A group of Greek-Americans headed by Archbishop Dimitrios of America will meet with US Secretary of State Colin Powell and undersecretary Marc Grossman in Washington.

    The Coordinated Effort of Hellenes (CEH) with a letter by US Senator Paul Sarbanes calls on Republican and Democratic US Senators to sign a protest expressing their disagreement with the recognition of FYROM by the United States under the name Republic of Macedonia.

    In Australia, SAE secretary Elias Rallis was assured by new Australian ambassador to Greece Paul Tighe that Australia will continue to use the name FYROM and will not follow the example of the United States.

    Meanwhile, FYROM Foreign Minister Ilinka Mitreva summoned FYROM ambassadors to Greece and the United States, Blagogi Hadjinski and Nikola Dimitrov respectively, for consultations in Skopje on the issue of the country's name.

    [02] THE BULGARIAN PRESIDENT WAITS FOR BETTER WEATHER CONDITIONS

    Thessaloniki, 15 November 2004 (13:45 UTC+2)

    Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov is in the town of Ouranoupolis, northern Greece waiting for the weather to improve to continue his trip to the monastic community of Mount Athos in Chalkidiki.

    Mr. Parvanov was expected to arrive in Karies, the capital of the monastic community, by boat but as a result of the heavy seas this was not possible. The Bulgarian President is currently in Ouranoupolis waiting for the weather to improve to continue his trip.

    Mr. Parvanov is scheduled to visit the Holy Monastery of Zografou where he will stay overnight and tomorrow will visit the Holy Monastery of Hilandariou before departing for Thessaloniki later in the afternoon to return to Sofia.

    This is the first time Mr. Parvanov is visiting Mount Athos as the President of the Bulgarian Republic.

    [03] TEMPORARY WEATHER IMPROVEMENT

    Weather conditions improved temporarily after the heavy rain and strong winds that hit many parts of Greece yesterday.

    The National Weather Bureau predicts that the islands of north and east Aegean as well as Thrace, in northeastern Greece, will be hit by heavy rainfall and local storms.

    Temperature will drop in northern Greece and in the next 48 hours will be at normal levels for the season namely, 7-8 degrees lower than today.

    [04] PAPANDREOU MET WITH THE EU AMBASSADORS

    Main opposition Socialist Party of PASOK President Giorgos Papandreou presented the Greek positions on the Cyprus issue, the Euro-Turkish relations, the issue of FYROM, and the developments in the Balkans and the Middle East to the EU states ambassadors to Athens in a formal lunch given by the Dutch ambassador.

    Mr. Papandreou stressed that PASOK is ready to contribute to the issues of national interest under the precondition that the government will present proposals and have a strategy.

    The PASOK President said to reporters that a new strong Palestinian leadership can be elected in a democratic way very soon and the Europeans can contribute to that as well as the United States and Israel.

    [05] THE FOREIGN MINISTER TO VISIT SOFIA, PARIS AND THE HAGUE

    Athens, 15 November 2004 (18:46 UTC+2)

    Greek Foreign Minister Petros Moliviatis will visit Sofia tomorrow to meet with his Bulgarian counterpart and discuss bilateral and regional issues as well as Bulgaria's European course.

    Tomorrow afternoon, Mr. Moliviatis will depart for Paris to meet with his French counterpart and the following day will be in The Hague to meet with the Foreign Minister of Holland currently holding the EU rotating Presidency. In the meetings Mr. Moliviatis will have in Paris and The Hague will be discussed issues in view of December's European Council meeting.

    Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos stated that the visits mentioned signal the opening of a round of contacts and consultations the Greek Foreign Minister will have in view of December's Summit meeting.

    On November 22, Mr. Moliviatis will attend the General Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.

    Asked to comment on the statement of satisfaction made by the Bulgarian side on the recognition of FYROM by the United States under its constitutional name, Mr. Koumoutsakos stated that the statement in question was completely compatible with a very specific stance adopted by Bulgaria, which was among the first countries to recognize FYROM under its constitutional name.

    [06] GAINS IN THE ASE

    Gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index rose to +0.31% at 2618.99 points, while the volume of transactions was at 128,4 million euros.

    Of the stocks trading today, 112 had gains and 174 had losses, while the value of 134 stocks remained unchanged.

    [07] MOLIVIATIS-MILLER MEETING

    US ambassador to Athens Thomas Miller met today at his request with Greek Foreign Minister Petros Moliviatis.

    Earlier, Mr. Moliviatis and Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Valinakis had a meeting with Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis ahead of the visits to Sofia, Paris and The Hague to present the Greek positions in view of the EU Summit meeting on December 17 during which the issue of Turkey's EU accession course will be discussed.

    Foreign Minister Mr. Moliviatis stated that the meeting with the Prime Minister focused on current foreign policy issues.

    [08] THE NEBOJSA TOWER WILL BECOME A HISTORICAL MONUMENT

    The Nebojsa Tower in Belgrade, scene of torture and death for revolution visionary Rigas Feraios and his 7 comrades by the Ottoman authorities, will become a historical monument and every plan for its commercial exploitation is cancelled permanently.

    This was decided in the contacts a Greek delegation, headed by Greek Parliament B' vice-president Mr. Sourlas, had with Serbia's Culture Ministry and the mayor of Belgrade.

    The Greek delegation proposed to the Serb side to restore the tower and turn it into a common historical monument for the two peoples in honor of the liberation struggle undertaken by the Serbs and the Greeks having as a dominant figure Rigas Feraios, who was imprisoned in Nebojsa Tower and was strangled there together with his comrades in 1798.

    [09] ANTONAROS: ATHENS AND NICOSIA SHARE A COMMON LINE

    Acting government spokesman Vangelis Antonaros stated that Athens and Nicosia share a common policy line responding to a question by a journalist on the goal and the outcome of the visit of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis to Cyprus.

    On the pressures exerted by the Greek Prime Minister on the Cypriot President to avoid exercising the veto power in December's EU Summit meeting, Mr. Antonaros stated that the Cypriot government should not be underestimated.

    [10] ANTONAROS: GREECE'S EMU ACCESSION IS NOT DISPUTABLE

    Athens, 15 November 2004 (15:50 UTC+2)

    Acting government spokesman Vangelis Antonaros stated that nobody in the European Union can question Greece's accession into the EMU. He made the statement in response to questions by journalists on the occasion of the ECOFIN meeting in Brussels tomorrow and on the likelihood of repercussions for Greece based on facts concerning the economic figures of past years.

    Mr. Antonaros stated that ECOFIN will discuss issues that concern the past and the future, stressing that what is important is the stabilization of the economy and the deficit reduction.

    [11] IMPORTANT MEETINGS FOR GREECE BY EUROGROUP AND ECOFIN

    This afternoon's Eurogroup meeting is important for Greece because it will discuss a European Commission note on the review of the statistics figures concerning the Greek economy.

    The European Commission will brief the Council on its next moves concerning Greece and the evaluation of the measures taken by the Greek government for the country to comply with the EU recommendations.

    The Eurogroup will also discuss issues concerning the developments in oil prices and the Stability and Development Pact as well as, proposals to issue euro paper money of smaller value.

    Meanwhile, in tomorrow's meeting of ECOFIN Council the EU Ministers of Finance will deal with the review of the Greek budget figures and discuss the outcome of the final negotiations between the Greek National Statistics Agency and Eurostat.

    The EU Finance Ministers will also discuss the fiscal framework for the years 2007-2013.

    [12] THE PRIME MINISTER OF FYROM HAS RESIGNED

    Hari Kostov has resigned from the post of the Prime Minister of FYROM. Mr. Kostov tendered his resignation to the country's Parliament President Lupco Jordanovski.

    Six months ago, Mr. Kostov had succeeded to the post Branko Chervenkovski, who was elected to the country's presidency last April, after the airplane accident in which President Boris Trajkovski was killed.

    Mr. Kostov, 45, announced his resignation during a press conference today and stated that he was led to this decision by differences of opinion in the FYROM coalition government.

    [13] AMAZING DISCOVERY CONCERNING THE LOST CONTINENT OF ATLANTIS

    Nicosia, 15 November 2004 (14:29 UTC+2)

    An international team of geologists and other scientists made an amazing discovery. They maintain that after searching for five months in the sea region between Cyprus and Syria they were led to the hill of the Acropolis of the lost Atlantis.

    They maintain that the mythical island is sleeping at a depth of 1,600 meters at the bottom of the sea.

    In a press conference the team gave in Limassol presented the course followed by the scientific ship and added that they spotted a hill with a 3-kilometers-long wall and other man-made buildings at a distance of 80 kilometers from the southeastern coasts of Cyprus.

    Citing relevant descriptions by Plato the scientists participating in the endeavor appear certain that they have found the Acropolis of Atlantis given the fact that 70 points of the findings coincide completely with the descriptions made by Plato.

    The discovery is to be confirmed, according to the Cypriot daily Fileleftheros, by a second mission scheduled to take place very soon.

    [14] COLIN POWELL RESIGNS

    Washington, 15 November 2004 (17:33 UTC+2)

    Head of the US diplomacy, Colin Powell, resigned today from the post of the US Secretary of State.

    It was an expected move given the fact that Mr. Powell himself had made it obvious before the US Presidential elections that he would resign even if US President George Bush was elected for a second term in office.
