The famous actor fainted before the plane took off. His son Ali shouted, 'dad, please breathe.' In the meantime, the door of the plane was opened and the health teams entered into the plane. However, Sunal, who had a heart attack, could not be saved. RESIDENTS OF ANKARA TO VOTE FOR NEW SYMBOL MILLIYET (LIBERAL)ULUGBAY COMES UP WITH FORMULA TO STOP TRAFFIC TERRORISMHikmet Ulugbay, from the Democratic Left Party (DSP), said the prison sentences and fines are not serious enough to prevent traffic accident and suggested that a driver who causes a traffic accident should pay for the victim's children's education. He also said that if the passenger bus drivers are married and have children, they would be more careful when driving since he has a family he needs to take care of. Ulugbay also suggested that the person who causes an injury of another in a traffic accident should look after that person while recuperating. GIANT COOPERATION IN ENERGY SECTOR SABAH (LIBERAL)BUS OVERTURNS: 7 DEAD AND 28 INJUREDA bus overturned in central Kayseri province as the driver slept. Seven passengers died and 28 others injured in the accident. The driver of the bus said that he could not remember how the accident happened and that he did not know whether he slept or not. FIRES ARE LIKE NIGHTMARE HE REITERATES HIS CALL: ''YILMAZ SHOULD ENTER INTO GOVERNMENT'' CUMHURIYET (LEFT)29 DIE AND 99 INJURED IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN ONE DAYAs the citizens flocked to the holiday resorts after temperatures increased and after the schools recessed, an increase was recorded in traffic accidents. A total of 29 people died and 99 others were injured in traffic accidents on Monday. ECEVIT: ''TURKS ARE SOVEREIGN IN NORTHERN CYPRUS'' TRNC WANTS COMPROMISE ON 3RD ROUND OF PROXIMITY TALKS Denktas said they would attend the meetings in Geneva with good will, wishing a consultation basis to be set up. RADIKAL (LEFT)TENSION ON ISLANDThe tension rose in Cyprus after the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) imposed sanctions on the UN Peace Force after the UN prolonged the mandate of the soldiers without consulting the TRNC. Greek government and Greek Cypriot administration got angry when the Turkish soldiers entered 300 meters into the buffer zone three days ago without any warning. The UN mission in Cyprus asked the Turkish forces to withdraw immediately and said the action was a violation of the status of the buffer zone. In the meantime, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said ''the world is slowly admitting that there is a Republic here and Turkish Cypriots are sovereign, although the world doesn't recognize this state diplomatically.'' INFLATION MONSTER FINALLY KNEELS DOWN State Minister Recep Onal who is in charge of economy said ''the monthly inflation rate is not important, what is important is the annual inflation figure.'' YENI BINYIL (LIBERAL)INFLATION RATES IN JUNE INCREASE ONLY 0.7 PERCENTThe monthly inflation decreased to the lowest rate in the last eight years. The consumer prices increased only 0.7 percent in June and the whole prices stayed at 0.3 percent. Thus, the inflation in consumer prices index (CPI) was 17.8 percent and the inflation in wholesale prices index (WPI) was 18.5 percent in the first half of 2000. NINE DETAINEES IN PROTEST FOR F TYPE PRISONS TURKIYE (RIGHT)SIX-MONTH SUCCESS OF CENTRAL BANKThe Central Bank said that the net assets corridor will be between -1,431.5 trillion lira and -968.5 trillion lira. The Central Bank noted that the last five work days average in June became -1,295.1 trillion Turkish lira and that thus the performance criterion in question was successfully fulfilled also in the second quarter. KOC HOLDING AND NORWEGIAN STATIOL TO ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE)HIS JOKE MADE US CRY THIS TIMENobody wanted to believe in this, but unfortunately comic king of the cinema, Kemal Sunal, died. Sunal had an heart attack when he got on a plane on Monday morning to go to the Black Sea Trabzon province. Dead body of Sunal was later taken to International Hospital. His relatives and artists rushed to the hospital. Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said he was an admirer of Sunal, and noted that he was never exhaused from watching his filsm. ''As a politician, I was getting lessons from him.'' GREAT COOPERATION IN ENERGY Koc Holding and Statiol said on Monday that the agreement in question was signed as Koc Holding wanted to be more effective in natural gas sector and Statiol wanted to enter the Turkish market with a powerful partner. Koc and Statiol will carry out their works on preparation and development of joint projects to gain an important place in Turkish natural gas sector. Koc and Statiol high-level officials will come together in Istanbul in October and announce the developments in their cooperation. TREASURY: INFLATION TARGETS TO BE REACHED The Treasury noted that the inflation figures of the first six months of 2000 is the lowest one in TEFE since 1990 and in TUFE since 1987. [02] TRNC PRESIDENT LEAVES TRNC FOR GENEVALEFKOSA - President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Tuesday that the proximity talks are being held to prepare grounds for face-to-face talks and added that ''no results would come out'' from the proximity talks which are starting in Geneva on Wednesday.Denktas left the TRNC on Tuesday morning to go to Geneva. He will fly to Geneva from Istanbul at 10.10 a.m. on a Turkish Airlines plane. Speaking to the reporters at TRNC's Ercan Airport, Denktas said he is going to Geneva to ''defend a rightful case.'' He stated that the ''Greek Cypriots are looking for an excuse to start a fight and negatively effect the talks.'' ''We will ignore all that and defend our case,'' he added. Denktas said ''Turkish Cypriots have tried for years to build bridges with their Greek Cypriot neighbours who have been working to become the sole owners of the whole island and who violently pushed the Turkish Cypriots away from the state of partnership.'' He went on to say that the Greek Cypriots believe that ''Cyprus is theirs'' and they are supported by the whole world, therefore they feel no need to compromise. He also noted that the European Union made things more difficult to resolve by wrongly calling the Greek Cypriots as ''Cyprus'' in their EU candidacy. ''Despite all this, I know that we will have no difficulties in expressing ourselves. Because, this is a very clear case, legally and politically. All they need is to see this. The truth is very obvious.'' Denktas said the Greek Cypriots are using the sanctions which the TRNC has been imposing on the UN Peace Force, as an excuse to hinder the talks. ''They were earlier saying that prolonging UN soldiers' mandate and talks were different issues,'' Denktas said. ''They were saying that I should not mix the two subjects together. Now they are doing the same thing. I don't know where we can reach through good will. They are asking me what results might come out from these talks. As I said before these talks aim to prepare grounds for face-to-face talks. Therefore there will be no final decision emerging from these talks.'' UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will start the talks and UN Secretary General Cyprus Special Representative Alvaro de Soto will supervise them. During the talks, Denktas said, they will discuss the Cyprus issue with all its aspects. Denktas also added that he doesn't yet know when he will return from Geneva. [03] FATIH FRIGATE IN NEW YORKNEW YORK - Fatih Frigate which will represent Turkey in the International Naval Parade of 2000, arrived in New York late on Monday.The International Naval Parade of 2000 will be held in New York Harbour on Tuesday on the occassion of the U.S. National Day. Fatih Frigate which is commanded by Naval Staff Officer Kemal Bescinar and has 200-member crew, anchored under the Verrazano Bridge. Bescinar will have a short conversation with U.S. President Bill Clinton through transceiver during the parade. Fatih Frigate will anchor at a harbour belonging to the U.S. Naval Forces on Wednesday and can be visited until July 7. Bescinar will pay a courtesy visit to Turkey's Consulate General in New York on July 5. Kemal Bescinar will host a reception on the Fatih Frigate for the diplomats, reporters, and other people on July 8. [04] DPT APPROVES 16 ENERGY PROJECTSANKARA - The State Planning Organization (DPT) approved on Tuesday 16 energy projects which are planned to start operation until 2002.Officials told A.A correspondent that 1999 mw Eskisehir Esel, 206 mw Karadeniz Eregli Atam, 75 mw Kirklareli Alarko, and 306 mw Yalova natural gas projects are among the projects that are approved. The officials said that the DPT approved several hydroelectric station projects including 2 mw Y. Akcay, 9 mw Arit, 20 mw Pamuk, and 17 mw Keklicek hydroelectric stations. The DPT ratified the construction of wind stations including Kocadag (50 mw), Canakkale (30 mw), Bozcaada (10 mw), Mazi-1 (39 mw), Intepe (30 mw), Bandirma (15 mw) and Datca (29 mw) stations. The 25 mw Germencik Geotermal Power Station project was among the investments that are approved by the DPT. The DPT ratified the construction of Kocadag, Canakkale, Bozcaada, Mazi-1, and Intepe wind stations on condition that these wind stations start operation in 2001. The natural gas power stations, geotermal station, hydroelectric stations, and Bandirma and Datca wind stations will start operation in 2002. The energy projects should be approved by not only the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry but also the DPT. After the DPT ratifies the projects, the projects are submitted to the Council of Ministers. [05] TURKISH DEPUTIES VISIT PARLIAMENT OF BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINASARAJEVO - The Turkish parliamentarians who are visiting Bosnia-Herzegovina to play a friendly match with Bosnian parliamentary football team, visited on Tueasday the Parliament of Bosnia-Herzegovina.The Turkish delegation headed by Hakan Tartan, the Parliamentary Administrative Chief and the General Coordinator of the Parliamentary Football Team, was welcomed by Pero Skopliak, the Bosnian Parliament Speaker. Speaking on behalf of the deputies, Tartan said that Turkey's Balkan policy aims at making the Balkans a peaceful, stable and prosperous region. Tartan noted that Turkey's Bosnia-Herzegovina policy targets at recognition of Bosnia-Herzegovina's independence and sovereignty by the international community and that they attribute importance to the preservation of multi- ethnical, multi-cultural, and multi-religious structure of Bosnia- Herzegovina. Turkey's policy depends on the basic elements of Dayton Peace Agreement, Tartan emphasized. Tartan said, ''we believe the Dayton Peace Agreement was the best agreement that could be reached those days. We also sincerely believe that there is not any alternatives for this agreement today.'' Tartan stated that Turkey wants to see Bosnia-Herzegovina as a full member of the Council of Europe (COE) and that it will support the steps that Bosnia take in this path. Skopliak said that Turkey is a big country and that he hopes Bosnia- Herzegovina will start to walk in the path of Turkey. The parliamentary delegation later visited the Sarajevo University. Nedzad Mulabegovic, the Rector of Sarajevo University, welcomed the delegation. The parliamentary delegation handed over the computers and sports equipment that are brought from Turkey by the support of M-Oil company, to Mulabegovic to lay the infrastructure of Turkology Institute that will be set up under the umbrella of the university. The deputies will visit Mostar city today and Turkish brigade in Zenica on Wednesday. After playing the friendly match on Wednesday, the deputies will return to Turkey. [06] PROF. SAZCI SAYS TURKEY SHOULD PREPARE LAW ON GENETICSIZMIT - Prof. Ali Sazi from Kocaeli University Medical Faculty said a commission should be formed in the Parliament for genetic studies and a law on genetics should be prepared so that Turkey can closely follow the latest developments in the study of genetics.Prof. Sazci who is the head of the Micro-Biology department said many scientists have spoken to the press about the deciphering of the DNA and noted that some of these statements are quite exeggerated. He said some scientists are misleading people who sometimes interpret the DNA's deciphering as a ''remedy for death.'' Death cannot be avoided, Sazci said and added that medical inventions can help people live longer lives. He also noted that the three percent of the DNA which hasn't yet been deciphered, will soon be revealed. Turkey has valuable experts in genetic engineering, Sazci said but stressed that they don't receive financial support in their studies. ''Medical studies are progressing very slowly in our country,'' he went on to say. ''No longterm plans for future are being made like in Europe or the United States. Turkey must integrate with the world science and benefit from medical developments. A genetic commission should be formed in the Parliament and a law on genetics should be prepared. If this is realized, medical researches will increase and universities will be given financial assistance. Moreover, some wrong implementations that can be done regarding people's genetic structure in the future, can be avoided.'' Sazci said the deciphering of the DNA will help to find treatments of many health problems as well as shedding light on to several unclear fields such as the origin of life, how the first cell came into existence, and evolution. [07] EXCAVATIONS TO START IN IZNIKBURSA - Excavations for the Roman Theater and ceramic furnaces will start this month in Iznik township of Bursa which is one of the most important centers of the Anatolian civilization.Dutch archeologists will do excavations in Mentese tumulus which is known as the place where agriculture first began in the Balkans. Dr. Bedri Yalman from Uludag University told A.A correspondent that excavations will start at the ruins of the open air theater in Iznik's Saraybahce area on July 17. Archeologists have been digging this area since 1980. The open air theater was built by the order of the Roman Emperor Trajanus in the second century. In the stage, there are figures of war equipment used by the Roman army carved in marble. Archeologists have also studied the antropologic aspects of the human skeletons which were found here. In the following years, extremely valuable ceramics were unearthed which belonged to the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantium, Seljuk and Ottoman eras. Another significant excavation in Iznik was started in 1981 by Prof. Oktay Aslanapa from Istanbul University. Aslanapa's team has found ruins of furnaces which were used to make ceramics in an empty field next to the Turkish Bath of Murat II in the city center. Pieces of pots and equipment used by people working at the furnaces were found here. Prof. Ara Altun from the same university will supervise excavations in this area which are also starting this month. [08] TREASURY UNDERSECRETARIAT: ''IMF EXECUTIVE BOARD DIRECTORS IS EXPECTED TO EVALUATE AND APPROVE SUPPLEMENTARY LETTER OF INTENT ON JULY 6ANKARA - International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board Directors is expected to evaluate and approve Supplementary Letter of Intent on July 6, 2000 which was prepared as a part of the second review realized within the framework of Stand-By between IMF and Turkey.The second supplementary letter was sent to IMF on June 22. A statement released by Treasury Undersecretariat said following the approval of Supplementary Intent Letter by the Board, a third drawal, worth of 221.7 million SDR (Special Drawing Right), will be realized. The statement said, ''in the Supplementary Letter of Intent, developments recorded in the first months of the year in economy were conveyed, and measures and policies that will be applied in the remaining part of the year in adjustment process were disclosed.'' The Supplementary Letter of Intent will be disclosed in internet address after IMF Executive Directors Board approve it. [09] 8,533 KINSMEN ENTER INTO TURKEY IN THREE DAYSEDIRNE - A total of 8,533 kinsmen entered from the Kapikule Border Gate into Turkey in the last three days.Necati Senturk, the Kapikule Civilian Administration Chief, told A.A correspondent on Tuesday that an increase is recorded in the entrance of the kinsmen into Turkey in July. Senturk said that 18,948 cars and 1,614 buses carrying 63,754 foreigners and 40,820 Turkish people entered into Turkey in June while 16,018 cars and 2,111 buses carrying 68,421 foreigners and 38,183 Turkish people went abroad from the Kapikule Border Gate. A total of 3,217 cars and 99 buses carrying 5,593 foreigners and 8,533 Turkish people entered in the first three days of July while 1,039 cars and 106 buses carrying 3,948 foreigners and 3,860 Turkish people left Turkey in the same period. [10] PRESIDENT SEZER SENDS CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE TO U.S. PRESIDENTANKARA - President Ahmet Necdet Sezer sent on Tuesday a congratulatory message to U.S. President Bill Clinton on the occassion of the 224th anniversary of the National Day of the U.S.The Presidential Press Center quoted Sezer as saying that Turkey and the U.S., two close allies, have supported each other for 50 years to protect the freedom, joint heritage and civilization of NATO. Sezer said that he is sure that the alliance and strategical partnership of Turkey and the U.S. will continue to be an important element in the promotion of peace, security and welfare in a free and integrated Europe, Eurosia, and Central Asia. ''Our further improving relations indicate the existence of a firm ground which is formed by common values and interests and a shared foresight for the future,'' Sezer added. Sezer wished welfare and prosperity to the U.S. and its nation. [11] DENKTAS, TRNC PRESIDENT, LEAVES FOR GENEVAISTANBUL - Rauf Denktas, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), said on Tuesday that he goes to the third round of Cyprus proximity talks with good will, adding that, ''if the compromise doors are open, we will not close them.''Speaking at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport before leaving for Geneva, Denktas said the talks took place to prepare a basis, noting that this meant taking measures that will provide equality of the two sides. Stressing that solution of Cyprus problem became impossible after Greek Cypriot administration was upgraded to ''legal government of Cyprus,'' with artificial reasons, Denktas said, ''they had started bloody incidents of 1963 to become legal government of whole Cyprus. They have split up partnership with the same reason. Thus, they got the title which we did not give them. We call for the preparation of a basis which will overcome this injustice, so that we can meet face to face.'' Denktas said, ''Clerides claims that they live under occupation. It was natural that we were unable to reach a compromise with a side covering this policy. We attend proximity talks to put this into a balanced shape. A shadow has been casted to these talks at the beginning. The Security acted unfairly against us with a decision it took recently. They encouraged Greek Cypriots by saying that they were the government of whole Cyprus, and that Security Council's soldiers can perform on Cyprus with their consent only.'' ''We will not be deceived with this game. We are going there with good will. We will not close the compromise doors if they are open. It should be an agreement that protects our rights, prevent the repetition of things that happened to us, and that protects the rights of Turkey on Cyprus. We have prepared its contents. A confederal solution is the name of this. We are presenting the way for compromise if they want compromise. We will continue to do this.'' Responding to a question about the health condition of Glafcos Clerides, leader of Greek Cypriot administration, Denktas said, ''they say he recovered. He lost some weight and in good health condition.''
