Cyprus News Agency: Information

Top Level of the CNA Archive on HR-Net

The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) is an independent and autonomous corporation functioning under the Cyprus News Agency Law.

The Agency is governed by a seven-member Board composed mainly of journalists representing the Union of Journalists, the Publishers' Association, the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation, the Press and Information Office and the Ministry of the Interior.

The 1989 law which established the Agency expressly provides that CNA cannot promote the interests of any political party or economic grouping.

CNA was established in 1976 under the auspices of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and started its cooperation with the Non-Aligned News Agency Pool and later with Reuters.

In 1984 CNA expanded its activities by employing more journalists and concluding a number of agreements with other news agencies which retransmit and translate a selection of CNA despatches in various languages.

As a national news agency, CNA focuses its attention on events in Cyprus or to statements and activities that have some bearing on Cyprus or are of particular interest to the island and our region.

The subjects it covers are home news, domestic politics, foreign policy, economic affairs, culture/arts and sports. CNA material is distributed to newspapers, radio stations and news agencies based on the island, as well as to subscribers, news agencies and the Cyprus diplomatic missions abroad.

It also cooperates closely with the Athens News Agency and the monitoring service of the BBC World Service. CNA is a member of the European Alliance of Press Agencies, the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies, the Non-Aligned News Agencies Pool and the International Press Institute(IPI).
