SAE notes Greece-Turkey Agreement

8 July 1997
"We would like to congratulate U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Greece's Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos as well as Turkey's Foreign Minister Ismail Cem for working out today's announced agreement between Greece and Turkey. It is essential to peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean that Turkey has now, under this agreement, committed to respect Greece's sovereignty, respect the principles of international law and international agreements and refrain from provocative actions including the threat of force," said Andrew A. Athens, president of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE).

"This effort is another indication that the U.S., under the leadership of Secretary Albright and President Bill Clinton, appears to be, for the first time in decades, taking serious steps toward addressing the major problems that exist in the Aegean," said Athens.
