    The Senate passed on Monday the draft law on the endorsement of the Guvernment Ordinace #45/1997 concerning the setting up of the National Air Transport Company S.A. as a Commercial Corporation. Attending the talks, Romanian Transport Minister Traian Basescu stressed that the current normative document supports TAROM Company for becoming a competitive company which can avoid bankrupcy. Mr. Basescu has also declared that the Transport Ministry will take over only the parts of social capital under State Ownership Fund (FPS) administration when the Ordinance will come in force and not those administrated by Financial Investments Society Muntenia. Thus, he denied rumours concerning the virtual nationalisation of TAROM Company. RADOR, September 23

    [02] Meetings between governmEnt officials and World Bank Representatives

    Victoria Palace in Bucharest, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea, Finance Minister Mircea Ciumara and government advisors had a first their first meeting with Mr. Kenneth Leigh, World Bank Director for Romania and Bulgaria. During the meeting, where the access of the press was denied, this week agenda was decided. In a statement, Government advisor Liviu Manaila said that the next meeting will take place on Thursday, when previous Romania-World Bank programmes were to be discussed. The Thursday meeting will decide if the programmes are to be updated according to Cabinet priorities. RADOR, September 22

    [03] Press conference of Romanian Foreign Minster Severin

    Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin has given a press conference and presented the main issues that the Romanian delegation is going to raise at the 52-nd session of the UN General Assembly. He said he will participate at the double capacity as foreign minister of Romania and as executive president of the International Conference of New and Restored Democracies which took place in Bucharest recently. In his address to UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday, Mr. Severin will point out that the UN reform should not be confined to a simple excercise of cutting down on costs but must result in an increased efficiency of the organisation. The Romanian delegation will warn against the consequences arising from a lack of consolidated state strucuture in certain countries in the world. Romania will also try to explain the concept of post-transition. RRI-RADOR, September 23

    Weather in Romania will be colder but still sunny in most of the country. Some rains are forecast in the mountains and north-western regions. Temperatures will range from 6 centigrades in the morning and 20 centigrades at noon. RADOR, September 23
