  • [01] ALBANIAN-SERB MEETING PUT OFF BECAUSE OF THE SITUATION IN SERBIA

PRISHTINE, DEC 6 - The Albanian-Serb meeting of New York, planned to be held from Dec. 18-20 this year, was put off for a later date because of the situation in Serbia, members of the delegation that will represent Kosova in the New York meeting told ATA collaborator in Prishtine. Among them are also senior leaders of the Democratic League of Kosova.

The DLK deputy chairman, Fehmi Agani today declared from New York that there are two reasons why the organizers of this table decided to postpone the Albanian-Serb meeting. Firstly, a part of those who were expected to take part in the meeting are preoccupied with the most latest developments of the events in Belgrade and secondly, the organizer (Foundation Karnegi) thinks that the focusing on the topic of Kosova, which is indispensable, cannot be realised at a time when the people are involved in an open conflict in the capital of Serbia.

The meeting was put off on the condition that another date be set for it as soon as possible, said Agani. bj/pts/jz/xh/k

[05] ZERI I POPULLIT JOURNALISTS REJECT NOMINATION OF NEW EDITOR IN CHIEF

TIRANA, DEC 7 (ATA) - The journalists of Zeri i Popullit have rejected the nomination of the new editor in chief of the newspaper.

In a statement published today in "Zeri i Popullit", paper of the Socialist Party, the journalists appealed on the SP Presidency to annul the decision on the new nomination of the editor in chief.

"We consider the decision of the SP Presidency to nominate Llambro Ruci editor in chief of Zeri i Popullit a mistake which gravely damages the mission of this paper on the service of the triumph of the socialist alternative in Albania," says the statement among others.

The political past of Llamro Ruci, as ex-personal counsellor of the communist nomenclature, does not fit to the current status of the free press, in which Zeri i Popullit is also included, continues the statement.

"The nomination of Llambro Ruci at the head of the Socialist newspaper is another action, in the course of mistaken actions, made in recent years and which aims at nominating people, connected directly or indirectly with the old communist system at the head of all SP structures", reports the statement.

The efforts to put under complete censure the party paper, by "trusted" people of the SP leadership, are significative evidence in this direction, underlines the statement of the journalists of "Zeri i Popullit". /kled/mt/k

[09] BERISHA HAILS DECISION OF EU COUNCIL OF MINISTERS ON FRIDAY

TIRANA, DEC 7 (ATA)-The President of the Republic of Albania, Sali Berisha, hails Friday's decision of the Council of Minister of the European Union to refuse the Yugoslav Federation the status of the favoured trade partner, the President's Press and Information office reports.

The decision was conditioned by the annulment of the local elections results, the non arrest of the suspects of war crimes and the real condition in Kosova.

"The decision," President Berisha said, "constitutes a direct backing not only for the Belgrade students in their liberating mission and the democratic forces in Serbia which merit a full support, but also for the peace and stability in our region which are no less threatened by today's Yugoslav mini-federation, based on violence, pressure, nationalism and chauvinism than they were threatened five years ago by the artificial maxi- federation, based on the same inhuman principles.

Friday's decision of the EU Council of Ministers is surely a genuine contribution to the implementation of the Dayton accord, whose charter, to be more exact, whose blocking is being maliciously used to prolong the political power of those, who created the biggest postwar drama in Europe. s.sh/jz/lm/Z/

[11] WORLD DAY "MARCH FOR JESUS" CELEBRATED IN TIRANA

TIRANA, DEC 7 (ATA)- By E.Xhajanka, On the occasion of the world day "March for Jesus", the "Evangelical Fraternity of Albania" held a concert at the Sports hall "Asllan Rusi" in Tirana recently.

Alongside numerous believers of all ages, also present from the evangelical communities of Tirana were representatives of the evangelical churches from the districts of Lezha, Korca, Durres and others.

The concert opened with fragments from the Bible read by the chorus of the Evangelical Fraternity and then followed Christian songs, joint prays and a drama interpreted by the troupe of the Evangelical Fraternity of Tirana. The concert transmitted the joy and peace brought by the faith in Jesus Christ and the message of understanding and love for each other.

In 1892 in Korca, upon the initiative of the distinguished figures of the Albanian history like Gjerasim Qiriazi, Petro Nini Luarasi and a group of patriotic youths the "Evangelical Fraternity" association was founded. It intended the fraternity and unity in Christian belief as well as the propagation of the Evangelism in the Albanian language.

This vision, which has been continuing among the youths since 1992, right after the establishment of democracy in Albania, made possible the reorganisation of the "Evangelical Fraternity of Albania". Today this association coordinates cooperation between churches and the activity of the Evangelical community all over Albania. jz/lm/Z/

[12] COMPOSITION OF ALBANIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL SQUAD DETERMINED

    TIRANA, DEC 7 (ATA)-By A. Keko,

The coach of the national team , Astrit Hafizi, appointed the 18 players to take part in the match to be played against the Northern Ireland's squad in Belfast on December 14.

At the beginning of the week FIFA lifted Albania's ban from the World Cup.

The Albanian football received a "shock" on November 27, 1996, with FIFA, the world's soccer governing body, taking the decision of suspending Albania from this organisation.

According to FIFA's sources the decision was taken after the Sports Secretariat at the Ministry of Culture and Sports had ordered the suspension of Albanian Football Association (AFA) general secretary Eduard Dervishi and dissolved its executive committee.

That day FIFA told the AFA that it did not recognise these decisions and that it would continue to consider Dervishi and the dissolved Executive Committee as the only official representatives of AFA.

The measure taken by FIFA jeopardised Albania's World Cup group nine qualifying match against Northern Ireland on December 14 as well as Albania's participation in international activities at club or representation level.

Albania and Northern ireland are included in the same group with Germany, Portugal, Ukraine and Armenia.jz/lm/Z/
