  • [01] READINESS OF EUROPEAN UNION TO HELP ALBANIA

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA) By Eva Allushi: The European Union confirmed Tuesday its readiness and engagement to give all-round aid to Albania, during a meeting held in the Foreign Ministry between the EU delegation, headed by the Dutch D' Asembourg, and the Albanian one, headed by the Albanian Foreign Minister, Arjan Starova.

    The EU delegation, made up of 13 experts from different fields, will hold several meetings and will familiarize with the situation in the function of the solution of some technical problems, to realize the arrival and the distribution of the aid accorded to Albania as soon as possible.

    D' Asembourg, the head of this delegation, said at the beginning of the meeting that the aim of this working visit of about 10 days would be the identification of the real needs for the quantity of aid, the way of its distribution, etc.

    The EU delegation, after the meeting held with the Albanian Premier, Bashkim Fino, and after the meetings to be held with the ministers of his cabinet, is expected to meet with the Albanian President, Sali Berisha. /a.ke/pas/mt/k

    [02] "EXTREMIST GROUPS HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON WITH FEELINGS OF GREEK MINORITY FOR ALBANIA" - DP chairman

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA) - "The extremist groups have nothing in common with the feelings of the Greek minority for Albania," said the chairman of the Albanian Democratic Party, Tritan Shehu, on Wednesday during a discussion in the Parliament.

    Shehu stressed that Albania has asked and has always had the support of the Greek Government to overcome the current crisis in Albania.

    "We ensure once again, on our side, that the Greek minority has been and remains a bridge which connects the friendship between our countries," said Shehu.

    During an interpellation in the Albanian parliament the chief of the National Information Service (SHIK), Bashkim Gazidede, spoke of a plan, called LOTOS, drafted in 1990 in Greece "On the liberation of North Epirus from the Albanian domination through an armed insurrection," from different Greek associations, also extended in USA and other countries.

    According to him, this plan was not realised then, but was being realised point by point now.

    Shehu expressed the readiness of his party to cooperate closely with European countries, neighbouring countries like Italy, Greece, Turkey, etc, as well as with USA, to come out of the crisis in Albania. /kei/mt/k

    [03] "THE GOOD RELATIONS WITH THE GREEK PEOPLE ARE UNSHAKEABLE" - declares Albanian Speaker -

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA) - By A. Frasheri: The good relations of Albania with the Greek people are unshakeable, said the Albanian Speaker Pjeter Arbnori, during the interpellation held Wednesday by the Chairman of the National Information Service (SHIK).

    During an interpellation in the Albanian parliament the chief of the National Information Service (SHIK), Bashkim Gazidede, spoke of a plan, called LOTOS, drafted in 1990 in Greece "On the liberation of North Epirus from the Albanian domination through an armed insurrection," from different Greek associations, extended in USA and other countries.

    According to him, this plan was not realised then, but was being realised point by point now.

    "The Greek minority and Government should be never confused with particula r people and organizations, with particular circles which infringe the integrity and sovereignty of Albania," said Arbnori, also supported by other deputies who discussed after him. /kei/mt/k

    [04] MEETINGS OF DEFENCE MINISTER AND STATE SECRETARY OF DEFENCE WITH GERMAN DIPLOMATS

    TIRANA, MARCH 26 (ATA) - The spokesman of the Defence Ministry reports that the Albanian Defence Minister, Shaqir Vukaj and the State Secretary of Defence, Ali Kazazi, held separate talks with German Ambassador Hans Peter Disdorn and the deputy military attache, deputy colonel Heckert.

    In this meeting they were informed on the the current situation and the measures taken to calm and stabilize the situation in Albania.

    The German diplomats expressed their interest on the continuation of the bilateral cooperation in the military field.

    Minister Vukaj stressed that "along with the urgent duties to reorganize the army, we are working to create the Albanian national army."

    It was treated in these meetings the contribution of Bundeswehr to prepare the Albanian peace-keepers and the participation of the Albanian contingent together with the German troops, in the framework of IFOR and BFOR, to keep peace in Bosnia.

    The first platoon will return from Bosnia these days, which will be follow ed by the second contingent, that has just finished the military exercises for peacekeeping in Germany, - ends the report of the Defence Ministry spokesman. /l.gj/eva/mt/k

    [05] MICHEL PERICARD, LEADER OF FRENCH GAULLIST PARTY, SUPPORTS PLATFORM OF NATIONAL RECONCILIATION

    TIRANA, MARCH 26 (ATA) - The Albanian Ambassador in Paris, Besnik Mustafaj, held Wednesday a long meeting with Michel Pericard, chairman of the parliamentary group RPR, Gaullist Party of the majority in power.

    Mr. Pericard, who had visited Albania a year ago, was interested in the reasons of the crisis which shocked Albania recently, as well as for the progress of work of the National Reconciliation Government.

    French parliamentary Pericard was particularly interested in the stand of the political forces during this period. He expressed the solidarity with the Democratic Party and other right political parties of Albania, and ensured that the parliamentary group he leads will exercise continuously its influence on the French government, aiming to help and cooperate with Albania today and in the future. /l.gj/eva/mt/

    [06] "AUSTRIA WOULD LIKE TO COOPERATE FOR PROVIDING AID TO ALBANIA" - statement of the Federal Chancellor of Austria, Victor Klima, on the mission of the European Union in Albania -

    TIRANA, MARCH 26 (ATA) - The Federal Chancellor of Austria, Victor Klima, in a press release for foreign and Austrian media, stressed on Wednesday that Austria would participate in the context of the international solidarity in the mission for Albania.

    The chancellor Klima was clearly expressed on the complete readiness of Austria to give all-round support for restoring the interior security in Albania.

    "Concrete details, as well as the number of military men planned to be sent in Albania will be clarified by the Mission of the European Union, which will see the situation in the country," says the statement of Chancellor Klima. The statement considers the situation in Albania alarming, and stresses that "Austria is very interested to restore order and tranquility in Albania" and that "Austria would like to give a great contribution in this direction." /s.sh/pas/mt/k

    [07] HEALTH MINISTER HOLDS MEETINGS WITH AMBASSADORS

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA)- Minister of Health and Environment Astrit Kalenja has recently conducted meetings with the ambassadors of Italy, France, the U.S. and Poland.

    During the meetings they discussed emergency needs in the health sector and defined ways to organise and administer this aid.

    The ambassadors expressed the readiness of their countries to support Albania both as regards the emergency needs of the country and a perspective plan.eva/lm/sh/

    [08] ALBANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS EU DELEGATION

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA)- By E. Allushi, Albanian Foreign Minister Arian Starova met in Tirana this morning with the European Union (EU) delegation, headed by Ambassador D'Ansembourg, according to the spokesman of this ministry.

    Starova appreciated the EU's constant concern in Albania and the concrete efforts to rapidly and accurately define the measures to be taken in a series of fields, particularly in that of security, to create a safe environment for the arrival and administration of the emergency humanitarian and economic-financial supplies.

    D'Ansembourg evaluated the efforts of the Albanian authorities to improve the situation at home, which would enable the complete engagement of EU and the international organisations in normalising the life in Albania as well as the holding of parliamentary elections under normal conditions and within the deadline set under an agreement between the Albanian political parties.

    Starova stressed among other things that "a prompt decision on a foreign military presence in Albania is of special significance to create the optimum conditions of cooperation of the International Community with the Albanian party, to enable the resumption of the economic life and trade activity in Albania."

    At the end of the meeting the EU delegation proposed the extension of the mandate of the EU Observers' team in Albania, without changing its fundamental function. Discussions on this proposal will continue today at specialists' level. kled/lm/sh/

    [09] ALBANIAN RED CROSS OPERATION TO DISTRIBUTE AID BEGINS

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA)- By M. Allushi, The Albanian Red Cross (KKSH) has began operation to help the citizens under difficult conditions with medicine and food.

    "A ten million dollar worth of aid will arrive in Albania soon from the International Red Cross Committee and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Federation for the citizens mostly affected by the recently created situation in Albania," Prof. Dr. Shyryqi Subashi, the KKSH President told ATA.

    According to the KKSH documents, there are some 10 000 individuals and 60 000 families to be provided with medicine and food.

    The operation will last for three months and will be run by the International Red Cross Committee and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Federation, together with the KKSH." eva/lm/sh/

    [10] TWO PEOPLE KILLED IN SHKODER

    SHKODER, MARCH 27 (ATA)- By M. Malja, Two people died last night in the Shkoder city, northern Albania, although gunshots were rarer than during the previous nights.

    The exchange of fire between two groups killed a 23 year old boy. The other victim was a three year old child, killed by a stray bullet. s.sh/eva/lm/sh/

    [11] GUNMEN SHOOT AT PUBLIC BUS - Interior Ministry

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA)-Unidentified persons sprayed a crowded bus with automatic rifle fire on Wednesday evening, at about 17:00, on the Tirana-Elbasan motorway, according to the Interior Ministry spokesman.

    The automatic fire killed two passengers, Hekuran Stalla, 32 years, and Iris Ismetaj, six years, and wounded seven others.

    The police are hunting down the authors of this grave crime. kled/lm/sh/
