TEPELENE, APRIL 2 (ATA)- By H. Cani, Prime Minister Bashkim Fino met yesterday by midday with local government leaders and Public Salvation Committees of Tepelene, Sarande, Gjirokaster and Memaliaj.

At the beginning of the meeting, the chairman of the Tepelene district council, Sotir Ceka, portrayed the situation, asking that payments be guaranteed for budgetary workers and pensionists.

[02] PD ASKS PS TO DENOUNCE ACCORD SIGNED IN VLORE

TIRANA, APRIL 1 (ATA)- By A. Frasheri, The Presidency of the Democratic Party (PD) met on Tuesday to discuss the latest developments in the country, denounce the agreement signed by the Socialist Party (SP) on March 28 in Vlore at the meeting of the "Committee of Public Salvation" and demand from the PS to denounce this act.

"The PD Presidency decided to launch a formal request to the PS to denounce the agreement signed by it in Vlore on March 28, an act which runs counter to the consensus reached in the national reconciliation platform of March 9, 1997," says the PD press release, issued after the meeting.

At this meeting the PD presidency approved a request of the DP chairman, Tritan Shehu, addressed to the ministers and secretaries of state proposed by the PD to the Government of National Reconciliation.

The request asks them to continue their normal governmental activity until decision are taken by the PD respective structures.

The National Reconciliation Government was result of the consensus reached at the round table of President of the Republic Sali Berisha with the 10 main parties. At this round table all decided to recognise the legitimate bodies elected by the people's free vote and not other structures.

Also, according to the press release "The PD presidency decided that Dashamir Shehi and Bashkim Kopliku be no more members of the PD parliamentary group as their parliamentary activity runs contrary to the political line and programme of the PD". kei/lm

[05] PRIME MINISTER FINO MEETS ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER PRODI IN GJIROKASTER

GJIROKASTER, APRIL 2 (ATA)- By H.Cani, Prime Minister of the Government of National Reconciliation Bashkim Fino, today, had a 30 minute tete-a-tete meeting with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi at the Gjirokaster town-hall. After the meeting Prodi said:

"It was a friendly meeting and we hope to have no more incidents between the two countries."

Fino told reporters that "First, Prime Minister Prodi came to personally express his and of the Italian government condolences to the families of the victims of the Otranto Channel.

Secondly, Prodi asked once again reconfirmation of the Government of National Reconciliation for renewing the demand for the arrival of the multinational force at these moments after the Otranto Channel event.

Thirdly, I personally asked Prodi and agreed with him: 1.To set up a joint team and it was Prodi's opinion that the issue be investigated by the two sides, in order to throw light on the truth. 2.I asked that the bodies of the victims be recovered and he promised they would make everything possible with all technical means at their disposal. 3. I asked economic aid and assistance for the families of the victims, a request which he accepted.

Finally: I asked him to reexamine the issue, which I have also set forward to minister Andreatta, for the legalisation of the Albanian refugees. He welcomed this but, however, said he would consider this issue later.

I was surprised to receive a positive reply to my invitation to go together with Mr Prodi in Vlore to meet the people there. Mr Prodi welcomed with pleasure the invitation and will make everything possible that this visit be realised in a short period of time.

Then, Mr Fino replied the questions by reporters.

Asked whether Mr Prodi's visit has to do with his visit to Athens, Mr Fino said: "We cleared things up with Mr Prodi. He confirmed to me he is a close friend of Mr Simitis and told me several times to convey his greetings to Mr Simitis. He also told me that as soon as he finished with a meeting in the Italian Parliament, he would phone both of us in Athens."

In reply to a question of the time when the agreement with Italy for the dispatch of the multinational forces would be renewed, Premier Fino said:

"As soon as I return from Athens I will talk this issue with my cabinet. I expressed to Mr Prodi my personal and my government's stand, but nevertheless, being a National Reconciliation Government with a representation from all political forces, I will reconfirm this request in a certain date."

Asked whether a political crisis exists between Albania and Italy, Premier Fino said: "There is no political crisis between Albania and Italy. What happened was a disaster and a tragedy, because it did not stem from any political crisis between our two governments. I think that the National Reconciliation Government has in these moments excellent relations with the Italian Government, just like it has, and will open a new page with the Government of Mr Simitis." pas/lm/xh/k
