[07] BORDER CROSSING POINT OF MURRIQAN TO OPEN IN 1998

    SHKODER, DEC.1 (ATA)-By Maja,

The border-crossing point of Murriqan in Shkoder district will open in 1998.

This was confirmed last night by the Shkoder Mayor, Bahri Borici, after his meeting with the chairman of the commune of Ulqin (Montenegro), Osman Rexha.

On this issue Borici and Rexha have signed an agreement of cooperation between the Shkoder Municipality and commune of Ulqin.

The agreement also envisages cultural, artistic and sports exchanges. An exposition of the Marubi photo-archives on the topic: "Albanians' efforts for the Declaration of National Independence" is expected to open in Ulqin, soon.

The border crossing point of Murriqan, six km. from Shkoder was closed in 1948. Its reopening was discussed in 1996.

The Albanian side, as well as many Montenegrin authorities, have requested the reopening of the other border crossing point, that of Hani i Hotit, closed after the March unrest in Albania.

The Montenegrin Government, too, considers there are no reasons for the Hani i Hotit border crossing-point to stay closed.

Radio BBC quoted the Chairman of Montenegrin Helsinki Council, Slobodan Franovic, as saying in a news conference that until 1948 there had been five border points from the Ada island to the Shkoder lake and today this border is completely closed. R.F/pas/lm/k

TIRANA, DEC. 1 (ATA)-By A. Hasani, There are only 1.800 persons who will be repatriated (from Italy to Albania), and who are not refugees, said the spokesman of the Prime Minister concerning the return home of the Albanians who fled their country during the March-May,1997 period.

He said that this decision has been taken in conformity with the agreement between the Albanians, represented by Maqo Lakrori, Secretary of State at the Foreign Ministry, and the Italians, represented by deputy Foreign Minister Piero Fassino.

"The readmission agreement has been the first step for releasing aid, credits and programme of the Italian government for Albania".

The spokesman said that this package will also benefit the 1.800 persons who will return.

The period of turmoil, triggered by the state run by Sali Berisha, forced many Albanians emigrate towards the West, until the situation was normalised in Albania.

After the June 29 elections, Italy and Albania decided to implement the readmission agreement, which has been applied with all the countries neighbouring Italy.

"The deadline for the return home of the unfortunate has been extended from June 30 to November 30, after the insistence of the Albanian side," said the spokesman.

He added that the Albanians have also insisted that the amount of money to benefit every one repatriated by the Italian government should be increased.

According to bilateral agreements this amount of money exceeds the $1 000 per capita in a month.

"Albania is no more an emergency country, therefore these people should come back home to work to live," the spokesman concluded. a.ke/kei/lm/k
