  • [01] "Mother Teresa" QSUT to assist in a number of medical projects in Albania - minister

    TIRANE, August 22 (ata) - By R Xhuvani: The "Mother Teresa University Hospital Centre (QSUT) in Tirane is taking part in the short term plans of the Albanian Ministry of Health.

    "In order to improve the situation in this institution, the Ministry of Health, in cooperation with foreign states and organizations, is applying a number of projects," Albanian Minister of Health Leonard Solis told ATA.

    According to Solis, the QSUT is included in the second project worth 30 million dollars of the World Bank to be applied in a three and a half year period. 11 million dollars from this credit will be earmarked for the wards of this complex.

    The Minister of Health also said that a big centre will be built for emergency cases and will be linked through corridors with all QSUT wards. A total of 6 million dollars will be used to realise this project and for the purchase of the medical equipment. As for the pediatrics hospital and that of surgery, Solis said that reconstruction there is in the final stage.

    According to Solis, a state budget fund of 79 thousand dollars will set to work the ward of coronary-graphy, while with another amount of 30 million lek the heart surgery will restart working and in which 1 000 people with heart diseases are treated.

    Also underway are the projects for the ward of kidney diseases, that of neurosurgery and for a facility which will be used to burn the remains from surgical operations. Efforts are being made searching for funds to rehabilitate the infrastructure within the QSUT.

    "A problem not yet solved is that of the dialysis and the medical treatment of the people suffering from cancer for whom 400 million leks are needed each year," said the Minister of Health, Leonard Solis. /das/xh/

    [02] Food items traded beyond the expiry date checked

    TIRANE, August 22 (ata) - By E Xhajanka: The Department of Food Control in the Albanian Ministry of Agriculture has made controls throughout the country and has blocked a great number of food articles whose date for trading has expired.

    As a result, 1085 traders have been fined to an amount of about 43 million lek.

    More that 900 quintals of food articles have been controlled in Tirane out of thousands of tons which are traded and consumed everyday. In the latest control the inspectors found great amounts of imported food items estimated at 2.8 million lek, which were spoiled or had expired.

    "Locally produced food articles have also been controlled," said the director of the inspectorate of Tirane Gjergj Kiri to ATA.

    Mostly controlled during this summer have been the refreshments and domestic ice creams. /xh/

    [03] Dutch project for consolidation of service to plants

    TIRANE, August 22 (ata) - By E Xhajanka: In the context of the PHARE project, this year a Dutch project named "Consolidation of the service to plants" is being implemented in Albania.

    "The project for which 1.2 million dollars have been invested, will serve to improve the legislation in the field of the plants protection, to furnish the laboratories with equipment, to increase the cooperation and to exchange experience along with the creation of private associations," the director of the plant protection, Adrian Koci told ATA.

    The project will last three years. So far, specialists in the field of plants protection have been qualified in the Netherlands, Italy and some equipment has been brought for the laboratories. /xh/

    [04] 23 110 people receive payment as unemployed in Albania

    TIRANE, August 22 (ata) - By Lolita Thanasi: Thousands of people mainly in a young age continue to receive unemployment payment in Albania. According to sources in the Albanian Ministry of Labour, during July, 23 110 unemployed people, of whom 11 544 patresfamilias, have taken unemployment payment. Divided into age-groups, most of these people are of the group from 21-34 years (11 071 people,) whereas categorized according to their educational level, most of them are people with secondary school education (12 196 people.) The greatest number of the unemployed who get payment from the state consists of people living in the city, about 20 157, while those living in the countryside are 2 953. /xh/

    [05] 1 billion lek credit by Savings Bank of Albania for Boville Water Project

    TIRANE, August 22 (ata) - By Lolita Thanasi: Among ten biggest creditors of the Savings Bank of Albania with credits worth nearly 1.9 billion lek are also some of the largest projects being built in Tirane lately.

    One of them is the Boville Water Project, with a 1 billion lek credit, followed by AMC with about 400 million lek and the Construction Enterprise with nearly 92 million lek.

    Along with the state sector, the private sector is also taking credits from the Savings Bank. In the credits general structure, the private sector takes 10 per cent of the total credits while the state sector 90 per cent. The private sector has taken credits estimated at 180 million lek while the state sectors has received credits worth about 1.6 billion lek. /xh/

    [06] Six former senior officials detained under charges of crimes to humanity

    TIRANE, August 23 (ata) - Six persons, former senior officials in the Government of Aleksander Meksi were detained Saturday night under charges of having committed crimes to humanity, sources of the military prosecutor's office in Tirane told ATA on Sunday.

    "Citizens Safet Zhulali, Halit Shamata, Blerim Cela, Bujar Rama, Sokol Mulosmani and Kreshnik Lusha were arrested in the late hours of August 22, 1998," says the report of the military prosecutor's office of Tirane.

    They were detained, the report continues, because "in collaboration with other people have realised through their actions the destruction of the Albanian state with incalculable economic consequences, causing thousands of victims, casualties, injured and missing people."

    These people are accused of "taking and giving orders for the use of war chemical substances for mass extermination during February 1997 in the city of Vlore (Southwestern Albania;) taking and giving orders running counter to the main constitutional provisions, to the decisions of the People's Assembly, they have realised the participation of the Armed Forces in the fighting operations against civilians, have made a selective arming of a group of people according to political preferences in order to place them against their compatriots."

    On this basis, the six detained have realised the penal act of "crimes to humanity," in cooperation, envisaged by articles 74 and 75 of the Penal Code. /das/xh/

    [07] Kosove continues to be encircled by Serb forces

    PRISHTINE, August 23 (ata) - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reports: According to Albanian sources in Prishtine, there was less intensive fighting on all the fronts of war but with great reinforcements and movements of the Serb forces which continue to keep a state of curfew.

    According to the Kosove Information Centre, during last Friday and Saturday mornings sporadic fire was heard in the city of Malisheve, while in the late afternoon hours the outskirts of village Carralluke and village Mirushe were also hit. According to Serb sources, armed Albanians have attacked yesterday positions of the Serb police in Malisheve, while according to Serb Information Centre, police forces in Zogishte of Rahovec and the positions of the Yugoslav Army near village Duhel, on the Shtimje- Suhareke have been also hit.

    LDK sources reports that sporadic fire was heard yesterday in the vicinity of the police station in Lluzhan, on Prishtine-Podujeve roads, while at noon the Podujeve city market was looted by Serb police. According to the Council for Defence of Human Rights in Kosove, Albanians have been chased, arrested and maltreated mainly in the Serb police roadchecks which continue to function in all roads. /das/xh/

    [08] Sporadic arms fire on border villages in Gjakove

    PRISHTINE, August 23 (ata) - The situation in the commune of Gjakove especially on the border villages continues to be tense because of sporadic arms fire, the Kosove Information Centre reports referring to LDK branch in Gjakove.

    Although sporadic fire continues, there are no reports of casualties or injured. On Friday evening, Serb police forces brought in the morgue of the hospital of Gjakove the dead body of an Albanian youth, whose name was not identified, but it was confirmed he was from the commune of Decan, the above sources say. The situation of Albanian people of the commune of Gjakove, who have fled their homes, is very grave. Medical sources have declared to the LDK branch in Gjakove that the displaced Albanian population along with hunger ares also threatened by various epidemics. A considerable number of children are reportedly suffering from diarrhea, parasites etc., at a time when humanitarian disaster in the city of Gjakove is taking great proportions, stressed KIC. /das/xh/

    [09] We insist in the people's will for independence - Rugova

    PRISHTINE, August 23 (ata) - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reports: "The Kosova leadership is insisting in its contacts with international factors in the realisation of the people's will for independence and is demanding international intervention for an immediate halt of the offensive of the Serb military and police forces," said President Rugova in a meeting with chairmen of the LDK branches in Prishtine yesterday.

    "The aim of the Serb offensive is the ethnic cleansing of Kosove," said Rugova, adding that this "needs a greater commitment so that the population return to their homes under an international monitoring and that others do not flee Kosove." According to a statement at the end of the meeting, Rugova has demanded a more efficient organization of the LDK branches and other local subjects to face the numerous and grave problems of the population which have been violently displaced by Serb forces. /das/xh/

    [10] Strong attacks of Serb forces on some regions of Kosove

    PRISHTINE, August 23 (ata) - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reports: Serb forces undertook early today mass attacks on the Albanians in some of Kosove regions. At about 5.30 a.m. they ordered families in quarter Bajraktari of the city of Suhareke to flee, and stationed their their tanks and other war means there and then started hitting the villages Pecan, Reshan, Studencan and Samadraxhe. From their standpoints in Birage, the Serb forces also shelled village Sllauzhan of Suhareke.

    The Kosove Information Centre reports that since 5.00 a.m. Serb forces started another great attack on Albanian villages of the communes Ferizaj, Shtimje and Lipjan. Under Serb fire are also the villages Jezerc, Budakove, Petershtice, Krojmir and Lipovice. A source from the field reported that this was the fiercest attack so far in that region, where members of the international monitoring mission stationed in Kosove are reportedly going.

    Besides, Serb forces deployed four days ago in quarter Vukovc of Komoran, started to shell today at about 7.00 a.m. some quarters of this village and the villages Kishnajeke, Nakofc, Sankofc and Fushtice. Albanian people of Stankofc, who are sheltered in mountains, say that Serb tanks and soldiers had reached their villages. In the mean time, Serb helicopters have distributed leaflets with threats for the handing of weapons on Albanian villages near mount Qyqavica, in the commune of Vushtrri, where many war refugees from Drenice and the Rrafsh of Kosove have been stationed. /das/xh/
