    TIRANA, Jan. 2 (ATA) - By O. Kadaifciu: The year 1998 has been satisfactory both for the publishment of books, as well as for the demands of the readers.

    According to the Private Publisher Association, some 700 books of different genres have been published during 1998. According to a survey carried out in the bookshops of the capital, it comes out that the best seller of this year is "Three mourning songs for Kosova" of Ismail Kadare. The second comes another book of Kadare entitled "The Albanians at the beginning of the third millinery," followed by "The Beast" written by the master of horror Stephen King, and then the book for the star of Hollywood, Leonardo di Caprio, written by Robert de Corn; the book "They will come," written by Stephen King, which speaks of aliens.

    "Fairy-tales" of Andersen and "Fairy-tales" of Tolstoy have competed other fairytales of other authors, Albanian or foreign ones.

    Further on, there are "The burden of the Balkan," written by the honored friend of Albania Edith Durham. The book speaks of the impressions of author during her visit in Albania in 1920.

    Other best sellers are "Greece in the trap of Serbs of Milosevic," of the Arvanitas author Aristidh Kola. This book appreciates the position and role of Albania in the Balkan and shows the "game" of Milosevic which is destroying Serbia and is trying to influence on the Albanian-Greek diplomacy"; "14 novels" of Cehov; "How to make friends and how to influence on the people"; The novel of the author Gabriel Garcia Markez "A Hundred years in loneliness," which won the Nobel Prize in 1982; "Migjeni" is an abridgement of the creation of Migjeni; "My father" written by Ilir Hoxha, which speaks about the memories he has from his father, Enver Hoxha. "The issue of Epirus" of Mit'hat Frasheri, has attracked the attention of the readers; "Dead spirits" written by the Russian author Nikolai Gogol; "Adolf Hitler," a book with notes from the life of the Nazi dictator; the dictionaries French-Albanian," prepared by Vedat Kokona and "German-Albania, " prepared by Ali Dhrima; "My life with Enver," memories of Nexhmije Hoxha, "Made in Albania" novels and stories from Teodor Keko. /pas/mt/

    [02] Children of Durres publish a newspaper

    DURRES, Jan. 2 (ATA) - By S. Gjordeni: "The children of sea" is entitled the newest newspaper in Durres, published by the cultural center of the children of this district.

    Its director, Myzafer Bekteshi, told ATA that the newspaper aim at presenting the world of children, their interests in the fields of art, science, culture, sport and others.

    In the first edition of 8 pages, materials about different activities of this cultural center have been published.

    The publishment of this paper was also greeted by the Minister of Culture and Science, Et'hem Ruka, in its front page. Among others, the newspaper stresses that the activity of the cultural center of the Durres children should be not only property of the children of this district, but also of the children from the entire Albania.

    The newspaper, with a run of 1000 copies, is printed in the private printing house "Teuta" in Durres. /pas/mt/

    [03] New Year in Kosova passes without fighting and incidents, but with gunshots

    PRISHTINA, Jan. 2 - ATA correspondent in Prishtina, Belul Jashari, reports:

    The New Year's Eve in Kosova passed without fighting and incidents, Albanian and Serb sources, as well as sources from the OSCE Verification Mission, reported.

    Anyhow, the sources stressed that powerful gun shots have been heard. Gun shots were also heard in the capital of Kosova, Prishtina and other towns, but there were reports on casualties.

    The soldiers of the Kosova Liberation Army (UÇK) waited for the New Year in their fighting position, safeguarding the territories they have under control by respecting the fragile armistice.

    Most of the Albanians in Kosova celebrated the New Year in their houses and in more than 400 bombed, torched and destroyed villages during the offensives of the Serb forces. The wish of all was to welcome the next New Year in a free Kosova.

    During the first moments of this year, new cries of the newborn babies were heard by bringing joy everywhere in Kosova. /dast/mt/

    [04] Investments in health sector estimated at 95 percent

    TIRANA, Jan 2 (ATA) - By R. Xhuvani: 1998 was recorded as a relatively successful year in the Albanian health system with investments estimated at 95 percent, according to the annual analysis held at the Ministry of Health at the end of the year.

    The analysis said that the short term strategy or that of emergency has been carried out during 1998 to help the health system overcome the collapse caused by the events of spring 1997. Health institutions were equipped with medicaments, apparatus and health staff.

    The medium term strategy applied during '98 was aimed at raising the level of health service in Albania. The achievements were reflected in epidemic control, monitoring running water, successful realisation of two vaccination campaigns against poliomyelitis at 95 percent, production of Albanian vaccines by the Institute of Public Health and defining of strategy on control and prevention of HIV/AIDS/SST epidemic.

    The first aid service was considered the first and most important issue in treating persons in need. To this end, 57 health centers were constructed in different districts, 13 laboratories were rehabilitated, 160 local specialists trained and draft document on oral health strategy was prepared.

    The figure on infantile mortality is lowered that is 21 deaths in 1000 births in 1998 as compared to 22.5 deaths in 1000 births in 1997. While the figure of maternal mortality is 22 deaths in 100 000 births in 1998 in comparison to 25.7 deaths in 100 000 births in 1997.

    Hospital system during 1998 has changed considerably as far as its functioning is concerned, they in the meeting said. The cardiology service, that of intensive care and kidney diseases in the University Hospital Centre "Mother Teresa" in Tirane have been reconstructed during this year, the construction of the university stomatological out patient clinic was completed, the Biomedical Centre has been reconstructed and 10 hospitals in various districts of the country have been equipped with various diagnosing and medical treatment means.

    In the field of medical information, the statistic data of birth rate and death rate, vaccinations and activities of medical institutions in Albanian have been processed in computers. The material of hospital diseases has also been classified according to international standards.

    During 1998, the long term strategy and further improvement of the midterm strategy have been determined and will be discussed in the First National Conference of Public Health on January 15, 1999. The conference will also draft and approve the main documents which will be called "Constitution of Health Sector." As regards the financing of the health service for 1998, the state has spent from its budget 7 479 million lek, plus supplementary budgets. To this amount is also added the long term soft credit of the World Bank, which amounts to a total of 22 million dollars. /s.s/ak/xh/

    [05] Customs house of Durres made incomes worth 84 million dollars for 1998

    DURRES, Jan. 2 (ATA) - By S Gjordeni: Some 84 million dollars of incomes were encased in the state budget from the customs house of Durres for 1998. This figure, said the director of it, Petrit Kociu, is 22 million dollars greater than that of the past year. This result although consisting 90 per cent of the plan of this year, was attained due to the serious commitment of all the customs staff to pass through the customs all the goods imported without allowing any speculation with them.

    During this year, the customs house of Durres has filed 29 indictments for the violators of the law assuring 23 million lek and has sequestered goods without respective documents, worth 34 million lek. The staff of the customs house has checked successfully during the past 12 months 1100 ships, 1000 ferry boats, 5000 vans, 600 trucks, 1600 carts and 34 buses. Kociu said that the customs house will be paid obligations by Albkrom, Albbaker, the Electric Distribution Enterprise (KESH) a total of 460 million lek, which will increase the annual income for that customs house. In addition to other commodities, the customs house faced an intensive work with the clearance of 7000 tons of fuel, 150 tv sets, 600 gas heaters and 1500 boxes with cigarette packages. /pas/xh/

    [06] Incomes from taxes - 56 % more than 1996

    VLORE, Jan. 2 (ata) - By Harilla Koci: 543 million lek were encased in the state budget during 1998 by the branch of taxes in the district of Vlore.

    The chief of this branch, Anastas Gjipali, said to ATA that this amount is 56 % higher than the realisation of 1996 when 348 million lek was the total of the taxes for the state budget. He explains that the monthly income of 47-50 million lek from the taxes of the subjects operating in that district, marks the highest average realised by that branch in the past years. "Consolidation of control in the accumulation of the taxes with the aim that they reflect the real situation of the economic potential of the subjects," underlined Gjipali, "is accompanied with the special care for the registration and licensing of all the subjects conformed to the respective legislation."

    Presently, there are 2 300 physical and juridical subjects operating in the district of Vlore in the fields of production and trade. Nearly 400 of them operate in the rural zone, not including here the small trade units.

    The chief of the taxes branch said that the accurate evidence for all the subjects has been one of the difficulties for the staff of the taxes branch, due to the lack of vehicles for them to move. /s.sh/xh/

    [07] Record sale of Diana stamps in September 1998

    TIRANE, Jan 2 (ata) - Record sale was considered by specialists of Albanian Philately the selling of the stamp with the portrait of Princess Diana, which was issued for the Albanian market on occasion of the first anniversary of the death of Princess Diana of Wales.

    "30 thousand stamps were sold within two days for local and foreign buyers," philatelists pointed out. In September they had put on sale the series with the smiling face of Princess Diana on this commemoration day issued by the Post of Albania.

    Although with a more expensive price than other stamps, this stamp accompanied with the inscription "Diana against mines" rouse interest among clients.

    The name of Albania in Albanian and the symbol of the anti-mine association are also put on the stamp. /lh/xh/

    [08] Durres Port: 6.7 million ECU-s by CoE and 23 million USD by WB during 1999

    DURRES, Jan. 1 (ATA) - By G. Kabashi: The year 1999 is considered as a very important period for the future of the sea pot of Durres, the largest port of the country.

    Leaders of the port said that during this year, the reconstruction and modernization of this port will continue with intensity and the administration reforms will deepen in order to turn it into a share-holding company.

    The major part of constructions will be carried out during 1999 for the enlargement and modernization of the terminal of ferries, financed by the Council of Europe with 6.7 million ECU-s. The Italian Construction company Cosmar will start the construction of the new quay of 120 m high during January. After the organization of a bid, the works for the modernization of the terminal of ferries will start. After its enlargement, the customs house, border police and others will be placed there.

    The delivery of 23 million USD by the World Bank will start this year for the construction of the quays of the port, improvement of loading and unloading. The measures taken by the port department for the reduction of the labour power to some 350 persons, as well as the near privatization of the loading-unloading sector are the premises which make 1999 a very important year for the future of the sea port of Durres, as the beginning of the Eighth Corridor in Albania. /pas/mt/

    [09] Low customs tax favours investors during 1998

    KORCE, Jan. 2 (ATA) - By B. Fejzullai: The new machineries which passed through the customs house of Korce during 1998 reached an amount of 42 million leks.

    Ridvan Havxhiu, director of this customs house, told ATA that the Albanian and foreign investors were favoured by the low customs tax on investments from bringing equipment and technological lines.

    Among them, he mentioned the equipment of the Greek company "Pet- Albania" for the construction of a milk factory in the town of Korce, a factory for the production of sausages and others.

    Important investments were carried out during 1998 even in the clothing industry. The new spinning mill "Euroteksil," as well as two new sewing shops were set up.

    According to Havxhiu, many machineries and equipment passed during 1998 through this customs house even for the development of the food industry, as well as for that of the construction materials. /s.sh/mt/

    [10] Albanian emigrants go back to Greece after holidays

    SARANDE, Jan. 2 (ATA) - By Sh. Hajno: Scores of emigrants, after celebrating Christmas and New Year with their families, went Saturday to the sea port of Saranda to return to Greece by ferryboats.

    The ferries "Kamela," "Kaliopi," and "Mimoza," resumed work on Saturday in the daily lines Saranda-Corfu and back.

    "It is expected some 5000-6000 emigrants to turn back in the island of Corfu through naval lines," the police chief of the port, Haki Koshi, told ATA.

    Also, a large number of emigrants from the districts of Fier, Vlore, Shkoder and others, are expected to return to Greece through the line Saranda-Korfu, by avoiding the delays they have faced in the border check point of Kakavija. /pas/mt/
