[06] Ship with smuggling fuel seized in Saranda

SARANDA, Jan. 10 (ATA) - By Sh. Hajno: The ship "ALSADI," loaded with smuggling fuel was seized on Saturday, sources from the police commissariat in Saranda reported.

The police chief of this commissariat, Edmond Kule, told ATA that the ship "ALSADI," with Honduran flag, was noticed by the border police service in vicinity of Saranda bay since 6 January. The ship was blocked after the controls which verified that the documents were irregular and the crew of the ship had dealt with smuggling, Kule explained.

According him, two members of the crew were detained, the Greek citizens: Johanis Veziridhis, 52, and Vasilis Pelekaqis, 48, under the charge of exercising smuggling and illegal passing of the border. While the owner of the border, Jorgo Diamandi, inhabitant of Ioannina, was not present just when the ship was blocked.

The ship has been sequestrated, but taking into consideration the unsuitable conditions of the Saranda port, it should be anchored in one of the other ports of Albania, because its load is very dangerous.

Sources from the border and criminal police reported that according to the documentation, the ship is supposed to have 270 000 liters of fuel.

According to Kule, this ship, which has changed the names several times, has exercised smuggling at least in 17 cases during 1997. Its previous name has been "Dimitrios."
