  • [01] Massacres in Recak - monstrous crime against innocent people

    TIRANA, Jan 16 (ATA) - Albanian Foreign Ministry condemned on Saturday the latest massacre in Recak, Shtimje, of Kosova, with over 40 innocent Albanians mostly women, children old men, executed by the Serb military forces.

    The Ministry said in its statement that this new act of fascist type committed by the grand Serb chauvinism units represented not only a monstrous crime against innocent people who were asking for their freedom and rights but it also was a crime against humanity as well as a worse challenge against the international community.

    Massacres in Recak showed once again that Belgrade regime was increasingly engulfing in a deep crisis. It was committing the most monstrous crimes and was experimenting fascist methods of massive extermination against Albanians in Kosova, the statement said.

    The new crime of the Serb chauvinism was at the same time a great challenge against international organisations which were engaged in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in Kosova.

    The statement said that this act showed that the regime of Milosevic (Slobodan, president Yugoslavia) had never been and would not be for a peaceful solution to conflicts and that this regime was a product of the most aggressive nationalism which lived in mid of continuous generation of conflicts.

    The Albanian Foreign Ministry urged the international community, international institutions, government of the United States and those of the European Union to immediately intervene to stop the massive exterminating campaign against Albanians in Kosova and find a right solution as soon as possible to this bloody conflict. /dast/ak/

    [02] Albania calls for urgent meeting of U.N. Security Council

    TIRANA, Jan 16 (ATA) - The government of the Republic of Albania called on Saturday for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council to deal with the situation in Kosova after the inhuman massacre of the Serb military and police forces in village of Recak, according to press directorate at the Foreign Ministry.

    The Albanian government had sent a letter to the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan expressing its deep concern over the situation in Kosova and urging a U.N. immediate intervention on the ground which would aim at easing tension and resolve the crisis.

    Pandeli Majko, Albania Prime Minister, has urged the NATO Secretary General Javier Solana to urgently deal with the situation there and adopt measures in conformity with the developments in the region.

    The Albanian government has authorised its official representatives at the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to ask for, in the next meeting of the OSCE permanent council on Monday, the implementation of the Verifying agreement and full deployment of observers in Kosova as soon as possible, adoption of measures for an impartial and objective verification of massacres in Recak, bringing perpetrators of this monstrous crime before justice as well as identification of provisions of agreements on verifying movements and reinforcement of Serb police and military forces in the Kosova territory.

    Paskal Milo, Albania foreign minister, asked the OSCE chairman-in- office Knut Vollebaek for a maximum engagement of the OSCE in the Kosova crisis.

    Milo had also sent a letter to foreign ministers of the Contact Group member countries expressing the deep concern of the Albanian government over the situation in Kosova and increasing violence applied by Belgrade regime against the Albanian civil population, press directorate said. /dast/ak/

    [03] Albania minister of Information visits France

    TIRANA, Jan 16 (ATA) - Albanian minister of Information Musa Ulqini left on Saturday for a three-day visit to France invited by the Institute of "Est Libertes."

    The minister Ulqini was expected to hold talks with Bernard Candiard, director of the Information Service of the French government to discuss relations of cooperation between the government information institutions.

    He was expected to hold a working meeting with officials of the "Est Libertes" Institution and Aleksandre Basdereff, former director of the Information Service of the French government and president of the INFOSCOPIE association-French Council Mission on the celebration of the year 2000 in France and other French senior political personalities. /lh/ak/

    [04] CoE to discuss judiciary reform in Albania

    TIRANA, Jan 16 (ATA) - By I. Luto: Albania Foreign Minister Paskal Milo will attend a high-ranking conference on Monday in Strasbourg organised by the Council of Europe (CoE) on judiciary reform in Albania, according to the press directorate at the foreign ministry.

    The Albanian delegation includes minister of Justice Thimio Kondi, minister of legislative reform and parliamentary relations Arben Imami and others.

    The conference will be held in Strasbourg between January 18 and 19 under an engagement by the Council of Europe in the International Conference on Albania on October 30 last year and aims at further supporting the judiciary reform in Albania, a support made concrete by an Action plan worth 1.5 million Euro.

    Albanian foreign minister was expected to meet with the CoE Secretary General Daniel Tarchys and other personalities.

    Other Albanian ministers will hold high-ranking meetings in Strasbourg, the ministry's press directorate said. /lh/ak/

    [05] PUK leader says government to boost fight against criminality

    TIRANA, Jan 16 (ATA) - By I. Luto: Party of National Unity (PUK) told a news conference on Saturday that it had reserves on the Alliance for the State and criticised it for failing to carry out its objectives.

    PUK leader Idajet Beqiri said that the defaults of the previous government had not been corrected yet and order and law in Albania was not at the desired level. He blamed the Democratic party (DP) for "continuing a destructive policy."

    Despite criticism against the ruling government, Beqiri said that the PUK would be part of the coalition government and help it to be consolidated.

    As regards the dialogue between the ruling government and opposition, PUK leader said that it would be successful if incriminated elements leave the Democratic party. /lh/ak/

    [06] Iaonnina offers aid for police commissariats of Tepelene, Permet

    TEPELENE, Jan. 17 (ATA) - By H. Cani: The police commissariats of Permet and Tepelene have been assisted recently with logistic equipment by the Greek police of Iaonnina.

    The police chief of Tepelena, major Flamur Veliu, evaluated the aid of the Greek counterparts.

    Also, according to an official from the police department of Gjirokaster prefecture, the police commissariat of Permet will profit a training program for the increase of professionalism among the border officers.

    The regional directors of the police of Gjirokaster and Iaonnina met in Gjirokaster to define the common strategy in the fight against crime and smuggling, illegal traffic of emigrants. The police director of Iaonnina, Janis Kroqidhis, promised in this meeting the continuation of aid for the police of Gjirokaster prefecture. /dast/mt/

    [07] Some 15 warrant officers fired in police region of sea port

    DURRES, Jan. 17 (ATA) - By S. Gjordeni: Some 15 officers of the sea port of Durres were discharged Saturday and 15 others were appointed to their posts.

    The police chief of this region, Kastriot Bruka, said that these movements were made to improve this body because a kind of naivety was noticed on those who were fired.

    The new warrant officers have all finished the two-year institute of police and have previously worked in other sectors, where they have gained the necessary experience for the fulfillment of their duties.

    These reshuffles are not the first being made in this police region. Reshuffles were made before in the order platoon of the sea port. /dast/mt/

    [08] Some 34 illegal emigrants rescued from death

    DURRES, Jan. 17 (ATA) - By G. Kabashi: Some 34 illegal emigrants, on the board of a dinghy which was sinking due to a break down, rescued from death on Sunday afternoon close to the coasts of Lecce, Southern Italy, the spokesman of Guarda di Finanza, deployed in the port of Durres, reported to ATA.

    The spokesman said that the vessels of Guarda di Finanza, in cooperation with the operation hall in Durres, noticed on Sunday at 15:40 some 3 miles far from the Cape of Saint Andreas a dinghy with 34 persons on board, which was sinking due to a breakdown, whose circumstances have been not explained yet.

    The staff of the Italian vessels managed to escape all the persons, by also identifying the owners of dinghies. According to the same source, among them were many women and children, two of them were pregnant.

    The dinghy with illegal emigrants of different nationalities, Albanian, Kurd, Chinese, might have started from the coasts of Vlore by midday and had a break-down when it was about to reach the coasts of Italy. /dast/mt/

    [09] Kosova politician visits Tirana

    TIRANA, Jan. 17 (ATA) - Upon the invitation of the foreign parliamentary commission, the politician from Kosova, Mahmut Bakalli, is holding a visit in Tirana, Parliament's press office reported to ATA.

    Bakalli met on Sunday with the chairman of the foreign parliament commission, Sabri Godo. Then, he had separate talks with deputy Premier, Ilir Meta and deputy Speaker, Namik Dokle.

    In all the meetings, they exchanged opinions regarding the developments in Kosova and the urgent demand for the solution of the problem; the dialogue started between the representatives of the Albanian political factor was considered very positive.

    They also stressed that the Resolution on Kosova, approved recently by the Albanian Parliament, which backs the will of the Kosova people to self-decide, is a powerful support for it. The Resolution also appeals on the international community for a greater engagement of its institutions for the solution of the Kosova crisis. /dast/mt/
