[09] Most youths favour sexual education

TIRANE, March 2 (ATA)-By E. Nepravishta, Sexual education in schools has been a topic of debate among specialists and the public opinion in general.

A survey carried out by the association "For the benefit of the Albanian Woman" among 530 youths (teenagers and youths up to 30-35 years old), in the country's major districts, in urban and rural areas, has provided data about this issue.

Meanwhile, there is a diversity of opinions regarding the level of school to teach sexual education. Almost 49% of the interviewed think that sexual education should be taught at eight-year level, while some 48% of them think it should be taught at secondary school level.

A small number of the interviewed think that sexual education should be taught at higher school level, while those who think that sexual education should be taught at elementary school are very few.

LEZHE, March 2 (ata) - By M Malja: The 555th anniversary of the Assembly of Lezhe, which laid the foundations of the unity of the Albanian people in the struggle against Ottoman occupiers, was marked in the city of Lezhe on Tuesday.

The President of Albania, Rexhep Meidani raised the national flag in the obelisk erected for this major event in the history of the Albanian nation, whereas the highest-ranking authorities of the country laid bouquets of flowers.

Taking the floor in the ceremony, President Rexhep Meidani considered the 555th anniversary of the Assembly of the Albanian Princes on March 2, 1444 in the city of Lezhe under the direction of the National Hero of Albania, Gjergj Kastrioti Scanderbeg, "as a very distinguished event in our history."

"It was the time," said Meidani, "when European Renaissance was knocking in the centre of the continent, when also the territory of Albanians was feeling the great awareness of the epoch, while from the East, Ottoman armies were hurrying to extend their domination deep in Europe."

"In this great confrontation," said President Meidani, "the land of Arbers bore the wight and had the honour to be one of the first fortresses of the strong resistance, on which depended not only its fate but also that of a civilization. Being conscious of this and resolute to defend their threatened homeland, the Albanian princes convened to unite the forces against the invaders.

"The Lezha Assembly was the result of the work of a wise and keen leader, of Gjergj Kastrioti Scanderbeg. But also the Albanian princes from the North to the South of Albania, who emboded no less virtues than their leader, took their oath in this city to fight together as brothers of the same blood, language, of the same tradition and territory."

"Also today, on occasion of this anniversary," said President Meidani, "we recall the Assembly of Lezhe as an event which has equally historical, relevant, Albanian and European values. The very circumstances of the development in Albania, and especially in Kosove have brought the right time to mend an historical injustice which has never been legalized and deserved and which cannot be postponed any longer for any interest or calculation of the sort of those which can but leave the bloodshed of the Albanian people continue."

Meidani said that "Albania, as a country linked by blood, language and history with the 2 million Albanians of Kosove, has made what an independent and sovereign state should do to help in a political settlement to the question of Kosove, in close cooperation with Euro-American partners." /pas/xh/
