[06] Prisoners of Kosova become refugees to Kukes

KUKES, May 22 (ATA) - By Riza Hoxha: Smre Konica, the notorious Serbian prison, 7 kms from Mitrovica (Northern Kosova), has been "relieved" from about 2.500 prisoners, all of them Albania.

There are 2.500 men from Mitrovica, Vushtria and Skenderaj, who entered Albania from the Morina crossing point, Kukes, on Saturday at 16.00.p.m.

"They released us early on Saturday," Xhavit Fejza told ATA adding that when they left the prison a powerful explosion was heard. Maybe, he said, it was an NATO attack against a Serbian military unit nearby.

Xhavit Reshiti from Mitrovica told that they had been maltreated and beaten in prison. He said that the Serbian guards always threatened them saying "You are men of the Kosova Liberation Army, therefore we would kill you all. We would kill you for you are Albanians."

He said that he had seen 65 years old men beaten only because they were Albanians.

Hazer Hajra, from Vushtria said: "A month ago we left for Albania. When Serbian soldiers stopped us in Mitrovica and asked for money, a friend of mine, who was driving the tractor told them that we did not have German marks. They killed him on the spot. His name was Besim Muzaqi. I gave them 100 hundred marks and saved my life. Later they separated us from families and sent us to the prison. They gave us nothing for the least two days, while for four days we had only 200 grams of bread.

The others said that a small room in prison housed 30 people. In prison there were from 14 years old boys to 82 years old men and even mentally disable people, who did not know where they were. The prisoners were not allowed to contact their families.

Most of prisoners were kept without being accused of anything and released on Saturday without knowing why they were kept for one month, Hazer Hajra said.

They said that the column of Serbian buses bringing them to Zhur was long and might continue until mid night. /pas/ak/
