  • [01] Message of U.S. Defence Secretary William Cohen to Albanian Defence Minister

    TIRANE, July 17 (ata) - U.S. Defence Secretary William Cohen, in a message to the Albanian Minister of Defence, Luan Hajdaraga, stressed that soon he will plan again a visit to Albania. "My aim is that the U.S. has active relations in the field of defence with Albania and I am happy to work with you to carry ahead the common interests of security and stability in Albania and in the region," writes Cohen.

    He also expressed his gratitude for the role that the Armed Forces of Albania have played in the situation of Kosova. "Self-restraint manifested by your army in face of the Serb provocations on the border was a very important element," writes Cohen.

    The capability and readiness of the Albanian unit created lately and trained by NATO for the elimination of explosive matter and munition is a special importance. It shows of the security measures adopted, the successful efforts of NATO and that it is an important symbol to increase faith of the public in the army and the government, writes Secretary of Defence Cohen.

    He voiced the regret for his impossible visit to Albania on the July 13 adding that during that meeting he hoped to discuss a series of questions related with the Albanian army, assistance and security from the U.S. and NATO. /led/xh/

    [02] 22 million ECU on reconstruction of Rrogozhine-Elbasan road

    ELBASAN, jJuly 17 (ata) - By M Lulja: The Turkish firm Be-Ha-She will make the rehabilitation of the road segment Rrogozhine-Elbasan, 36 km long. Sources from the prefecture of Elbasan told ATA that on the work on that road segment, part of the Corridor 8, will be employed 300 Albanian workers and specialists for a two-year period.

    The Turkish firm will invest 22 million ECU and after the main construction site is set up in village Pajove of Peqin and the solution of preliminary problems, the work is expected to start on July 24. /led/xh/

    [03] Meetings of Albanian Trade Minister with representatives of U.S.Congress

    TIRANE, July 17 (ata) - The Albanian Minister of Economic Cooperation and Trade, Ermelinda Meksi, together with a group of Albanian parliamentarians, met recently with representatives of the U.S. Administration and Congress in Washington.

    In the meeting that Meksi had with Ambassador Leri Neper, coordinator of U.S. Assistance for Eastern Europe, the latter stressed that "the aim of the U.S. party is Albania's integration in international organizations, and first of all in the WTO and EU."

    Neper mentioned the increase by thrice of the funds of the U.S. program of assistance for Albania within this year and stressed that presently, work is going on with the U.S. Congress for the approval of a high quota of assistance for the new fiscal year which starts in September.

    Meksi met also with Dorothy Dvorksin, trade assistant representative of the U.S. in the White House, who said that "we envisage that Albania must take part in the Third Ministerial Conference of the WTO due in Seattle of the United States this November, with the status of a member." She said that "there is not any obstacle for the signing of the bilateral agreement between the U.S. and Albania in the context of the World Trade Organization." /led/

    [04] Four victims not yet recovered from Lake Fierza

    HAS, July, 17 (ATA) - By Riza Hoxha: The four victims of yesterday's accident were not yet recovered from Lake Fierza until Friday at 2 p.m.

    The accident took place on Thursday at 2.20 p.m. when a van with 12 passengers, directed by Halil Thaci, changed its direction and fell down in the lakewhile travelling to Kruma, 4 km from Kukes. Specialists say that a technical problem with the steerage might have caused the accident, although they have not yet found the real cause of the accident. Eight people have managed to get safe from the van, but four others are still 50 meters deep in the lake.

    This accident is regarded to be the gravest in Lake Fierza since 1978, when it was created.

    In 1992, a car fell very near the place where this accident took place, causing 4 victims, while in 1996 a truck fell in the lake, causing 2 victims. /led/so/xh/

    [06] World Bank President James Wolfenson in Tirane on July 18

    Tirana, July, 17 (ata) By M. Pupa: The President of the World Bank, James Wolferson, will come to Tirana tomorrow, on a one-day official visit, invited from the Albanian Prime Minister, Pandeli Majko, sources from the headquarters of this Bank in Tirana told ATA.

    The principal reason of his visit is to see the situation here, after the crisis of Kosovo. He will discuss the all-sided cooperation of the World Bank with the Albanian Government and will also search other possible fields of cooperation for the future.

    During his visit, Mr. Wolferson will see the progress and challenges in the institutional reform and the consolidation of the governing skills in Albania. During his stay in Albania, Mr Wolferson is expected to meet Albanian senior state personalities. /led/so/xh/

    [08] Natural park to surround Scanderbeg's Memorial in Lezhe

    TIRANE, Juny 17 (ata) - By K Shehu: The memorial of the Albanian National Hero Gjergj Kastriot in Lezha town, one of the monuments of the Albanian history and culture, will be surrounded by a natural park on the basis of a project expected to be completed by the end of July.

    Sources from the Institute of Monuments told ATA that the park will cover the area on the northern, western and southern part of the Memorial of Scanderbeg. A part of the park is already planted with low and high trees, while the entire spot will be covered with grass, with narrow paths made of stone.

    The memorial was inaugurated in 1981. It is located in the Cathedral of the Church of St.Koll in the town of Lezha, a zone of great archaeological, historical and cultural values. /led/xh/

    [09] Infrastructure in focus of Interministerial Committee of Economic Policies

    TIRANA, July 17 (ata) - By D Koca: Albania Prime Minister Pandeli Majko considered last night's meeting of the Interministerial Committee for Economic Policies as one of the most important of this institution, because it will examine the priority projects in the field of energy, gaspipelines, construction of new hydro power stations, etc., while the deputy premier Ilir Meta said that projects of priority will be presented not only for the economy of the country but also for the regional development in general.

    The Minister of Transport, Ingrid Shuli, said that the infrastructure remains one of the main priorities in the Pact of Stability. Most important among these are Corridor 8, Corridor North-South, the road axis Durres- Milot-Kukes-Morine which will improve connection by road of Albania with Kosova. /led/xh/

    [10] International Folk Festival in Sarajeva

    - First prize for Albanian ballet dancers - TIRANE, july 17 (ata) - By Ornela Kadaifciu: The pupils of the Albanian Ballet Academy were awarded the first prize in the International Folk festival held in Sarajeva, Bosnia, from July 5-10, 1999. The festival jury awarded the first prize of the festival to the Albanian ballet dancers for the high level of their artistic interpretation and for the diversity of the Albanian folklore and folk costumes.

    The group of ballet dancers of the only Ballet Academy in Albania, consisting of about 300 ballet dancers of the third and fourth grades of this academy, were presented in that activity with a program of dances selected from all regions of the country.

    Taking part in the Folk Festival, the second of this kind in Bosnia after the war there, were about 60 folk groups from some countries of the world, such as Egypt, Croatia, Macedonia, etc. /led/xh/

    [11] Norwegian police gathering testimonies for Serb crimes in Kosova

    TIRANE, July 17 (ata) - Norwegian forensic experts have started to interview Albanian refugees from Kosova who are temporarily living in Norway, so that to gather facts for the crimes of Serb forces towards the Albania population in Kosova, Kosovapress reports.

    The Kosova news agency said that Kripos, the crime sector operating in the context of the Norwegian police, is cooperating closely with the Hague Court and so far it has interviewed about 2 500 Albanian refugees.

    Kosovapress also reported that a team of Norwegian police is expected to go to Kosova the coming week to continue direct investigation on the ground. /p.ta/xh/

    [12] Berisha says Extraordinary Assembly to decide on return of DP to Parliament

    TIRANE, July 17 (ATA) - By A.Haxhiu: The chairman of Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, invited on Saturday the Extraordinary Assembly of this party to decide on return of PD to parliament, thing, that according to him is demanded even by the international community.

    "The return of DP to Parliament would serve to consolidate our ideas and options for restoration of order and peace and for fighting the negative phenomenons such as corruption, smuggling and the like", said Berisha:

    According to him, DP will be engaged for new political elections and choices, because as he said "the present government did not manage to keep its promises given to the Albanian citizens".

    Regarding the situation in the region and in Kosove, Berisha pointed out that only the independence of Kosove would serve as a stability factor in the region.

    The Extraordinary Assembly of DP, actually carrying on its proceedings, is gathered to view the decision taken 10 months ago by the DP National Council regarding the final boycott from parliament, and to decide on the return of this party to parliament. /dast/A.A/

    [13] NATO will remain a present partner in Albania; Premier

    DURRES, July 17 (ATA) - By Enkelejda Koraqi: Albanian Premier, Pandeli Majko, payed a visit on Saturday in AFOR Command dislocated in Plepa, Durres.

    "NATO will remain a present partner and cooperator in Albania", briefed Majko after the meeting with AFOR Commander in Albania, John Reith."

    Albanian Premier is reported to have a short workshop with the NATO commanders and senior officials who operate in framework of AFOR mission. The meeting was organized under closed doors.

    NATO is a guarantee not only for peace in the region and for the Pact of Stability, but it is guarantee of partnership, position hailed by all political parties of Albania.

    Asked about the settlement of a new NATO force in Albania, Majko said that the name is not important, but only NATO will be guaranteed by Albanian government to realize the plans discussed previously.

    After the visit Albania Premier and AFOR commander, John Reith, left for Kukes, where is set up a make-shift camp for Kosovars. /dast/A.A/

    [14] Albanian Premier visits Kukes

    TIRANE, July 17 (ATA) - By Riza Hoxha: Albanian Premier, Pandeli Majko, accompanied by the AFOR Commander, John Reith, payed a visit in Kukes on Saturday.

    Majko got acquainted with the actual situation in Kukes prefecture during a meeting he held with representatives of Kukes local government.

    The situation created there three months ago was called a crisis by Majko. "NATO and UNHCR played an important role to cope with the grave humanitarian situation created in Kukes, and for these reasons the road Durres-Kukes, will be one of the main objects of the Stability Pact", added Majko.

    On his part, General Reith considered the cooperation between Albanian government and NATO as a priority in achieving of the success in north- eastern Albanian region. He pointed out that a decision on the future of NATO troops in Albania is not adopted yet, and mentioned that the set date for adopting a decision will be July 19, but he added that the cooperation between Albania ans NATO will countinue to be strong even in the future. /dast/A.A/

    [15] Gratitude for Italian soldier who rescued a child's life

    DURRES, July 17 (ATA) - By Gezim Kabashi: AFOR Command organized a simple ceremony as a sign of gratitude for the Italian soldier who rescued the life of a child from Vlore.

    Deputy-Commander of NATO troops in Albania, General-Major Franco Ganguzza, handed to the Italian soldier, Loenardo Marino, member of "San Marko " battalion, the award of the "Allied Harbor" operation.

    On Wednesday at about 14 p.m the life of Garent Nuri, aged 10, was highly in danger. Leonardo Marino ran and swam for nearly 200 meters and brought the child to the ambulance of the battalion. "I hurried, looked at the dead face of the child and the time had stopped for me", tells Marino. "Albanian policemen Muho has his part in the Garenti's life rescuing", said Marino who is in Vlore since March 28, in the framework of NATO forces.

    Leonardo Marino comes from Catania, and has previously worked as a dentist technician. This is he first time Marino is abroad and he feels happy for the child, who "has given another meaning to his life". /pas/A.A/

    [16] One Iraqi national and two Syrians expelled from Albania

    TIRANE, July 17 (ATA) - By U.Bajrami: Albanian Minister of Public Order, Spartak Poçi, based on the law "On emigration", ordered the expulsion of the Iraqi national, Muhamed Nexhip Jasin and the Syrians Abdyl Muem Naem and Usama Naom, together with their families. The motivation is "Violation of Albanian state laws".

    The spokesman of the ministry of Public Order, told ATA, that the order was executed by the forces of Tirane police Directory on Friday. /pas/A.A/
