[03] Local authorities ask abolition of tax on foreing tourists

SARANDE, Nov 19 (ATA)- By Sh. Hajno, The number of daily tourists in the coastal city of Saranda during the touristic season of this year was 262. This fact, confirmed by the prefect of Vlora, Tare Hamo, at a meeting of local government authorities in Saranda, caused reactions regarding the tariffs dictated by the respective law amended by the Albanian Parliament in December 1998.

"The portal tax on each foreing tourist coming from Corfu, Greek island, to visit Saranda and the antique city of Butrinti within one day, is quite absurd", the chairman of the district council Thoma Papagjika told ATA. According to him, some 6500 daily tourists visited Saranda a year ago. This number was expected to be doubled during this year.

"As soon as they learned of the portal tax of US$ 47, some English tourists did not even get down from the ferry and returned back to Corfu", Auron Tare, responsible for the administration and projects office of Butrinti confirms.

Local government authorities in Saranda think that the portal tax should not be applied for a certain period of time in Albania, at least on daily tourists. According to Papagjika "this tax should be abolished".

The prefect of Vlore, Sarande and Delvine, Hamo joins Papagjika. "There should be no tax on tourists", says Hamo. /so/
