[01] KIRO GLIGOROV: APPEAL FOR UNITY IN ALLIANCE FOR
MACEDONIA
"My intention to address the public in the country has
been motivated by the latest events in the internal political
situation in the Alliance for Macedonia. In assessing that this
is a very serious and sensitive question with internal and
foreign political dimensions on the presence and the future of
the country, I would like to point out several facts: The
Alliance for Macedonia was constituted as an election coalition
during the second parliamentarian and presidential elections in
1994. Practically, it was formed as a result of the joint
activities of the parties in the first and the second
parliamentarian elections. The idea did not have only pragmatic
goals with the purpose of conquering power, but it was an idea
for gathering parties with similar determinations and identical
political goals, with the purpose of intensifying democracy and
economic progress, as well as the international position and
affirmation of the Republic of Macedonia. So, the PDP (Party for
Democratic Prosperity) also joined the formation of the
government as a coalition partner. These were the basic motives
for me to accept to be the common presidential candidate of the
parties composing the Alliance for Macedonia with the hope that
their majority in parliament and the coalition government will
urge the process of efficient political action, for stabilization
of democracy, for economic perspectives. The citizens of the
Republic of Macedonia understood this very well and the election
results are known. Unfortunately, in the last few months a
process for the breaking-up of the Alliance for Macedonia has
started and in a short period a number of the defined principles
were forgotten, while personal intolerance and personal clashes
became ardent, and the general political climate in the country
can have long-range consequences not only inside the country but
also concerning the authority of our international position.
Moreover, all this is taking place at the time when all the
political goals of the Alliance have been accomplished -- a firm
international position of the Republic of Macedonia and its
membership in all international organizations, the continuation
of the course of reforms in the country and the rising interest
of the international capital and of a large number of countries
for the stabilization of the economic situation in the Republic
of Macedonia. Considering that I was the common candidate of the
Alliance, I feel personally responsible and I want to appeal to
the Liberal Party and to the Social Democratic Alliance to try
and find acceptable solutions to the events, and thus prove that
the Macedonian Government is functioning as a political
government, and that the Macedonian citizens voted for the
Alliance for Macedonia; that it was not a pragmatic creation for
an easy seize of the power, but that it was a joint duty and
obligation in the realization of the common platform, and
therefore if one of the members of the Alliance is expelled,
there will be a newly composed structure that will not express
the identity and the political platform of the Alliance, as well
as my determination to support this platform. I believe that it
is not yet too late to find a common reasonable solution because
things must not be solved with radicalism that is basically
founded on personal passions and personal settlements of the
accounts. So, I appeal to both parties to sit together at a table
and to expose all disputes in a sincere way in order to re-
examine the possibilities for maintaining the Alliance for
Macedonia, or if its time is over, then everybody must accept
one's own responsibility for the future events. I hope that my
address will be understood as my good will and concern for the
future of the country, particularly because I feel personally
responsible for what we jointly promised the citizens of the
Republic of Macedonia.
[02] FINAL CONSULTATIONS IN PARTIES
The reconstruction of the Government of the Republic of
Macedonia is reaching a final phase. The four parties of the
ruling coalition convened yesterday behind closed doors, NOVA
MAKEDONIJA reports. Such intensive party activity was prompted by
the SDAM party meeting on Monday, and especially its continuation
yesterday, at which, according to all announcements, the definite
proposal for the reconstruction of the Government was due to be
drawn up. Yesterday, up till the statement by President Kiro
Gligorov, in which he urged the SDAM and the LP to make one more
attempt at finding a common and reasonable solution to retain the
Alliance for Macedonia, the men from the highest SDAM leadership
claimed they would not back down from the stand not to have any
ministers-Liberals in the new government cabinet, and that the
Alliance for Macedonia could also survive with only two partners.
By the time the newspaper closed, there was still no information
whether this stand had been changed in the meantime. Otherwise,
the Liberals were also in session yesterday, however, they were
not inclined to give out any information, so the only thing we
found out at this party's headquarters is that they should not be
expected to release any kind of announcement and that no one has
consulted them over the reconstruction so far.
PDP, according to unofficial announcements, is already
calculating which positions it would win if the Liberals actually
exit the Government, while the Socialists announced they would
take an active part in the new Government.
[03] DP: ISMAIL'S RESIGNATION - CONFIRMATION OF OUR STAND
The written resignation of the minister-spokesman in
the Macedonian Government Gjuner Ismail, as well as the dismissal
of the director and editor in chief of the Macedonian Television
Sasho Ordanoski, was the motive for yesterday's news conference
of the oppositional Democratic Party, NOVA MAKEDONIJA reports. As
the DP spokesman Jovan Manasievski stated, his party has no
remarks in regard to minister Ismail's explanation of his
resignation, and that the DP agrees entirely with his assertions
regarding the character of the Government. "Ismail has explicitly
accused his recent Government, its narrowest leadership and Prime
Minister Crvenkovski himself, of a number of things. He says that
this Government has no intention of fortifying democracy, that it
is motivated only by its personal interests to profit, that it is
strengthening the oligarchic type of rule. Every personal
profiteering activity is camouflaged behind higher state
interests," Manasievski said.
According to NOVA MAKEDONIJA, Manasievski tabled the
dilemma why the government spokesman had noticed those
irregularities so late, and how much Ismail felt personally
responsible for creating the picture he described in his letter
of resignation, since, as Manasievski said, he was a direct
participant in such oligarchic calculations.
On the occasion of the dismissal of the director and
editor in chief of MTV, the DP feels that such a step is a
logical consequence of the politics, "that Ismail depicted so
well," and that it is not the result of some kind of principled
battle within the MRTV. "This change is a product of the party
clashes between SDAM and LP," Manasievski said.
[04] KILLER MONE ANDONOVSKI CAPTURED IN MILAN
Mone Andonovski, who is responsible for killing three
people in the judicial department in Vinica on September 25, last
year, and who disappeared without a trace after committing this
act, has been arrested in Milan - Italy, in a joint action of the
Macedonian and Italian police, on February 3, this year, after
being in flight for more than 4 months.
In the next 40 days, he is expected to be extradited to
Macedonia, to face criminal charges.
