  • [01] Meeting of governing coalition leaders

While meeting at Victoria Palace on Tuesday, Romanian Prime Minister Radu Vasile and leaders of the governing coalition have decided that an emergency ordinance should allow another five-year delay in the cancellation of lodging contracts to expire by April 8, this year. The leaders of the Christian Democrat National Peasant Party (PNTCD) and National Liberal Party (PNL), Ioan Diaconescu and Mircea Ionescu Quintus, said the return of abusively confiscated properties was also under Mebate, and participants were about to find a final solution to the matter; a decision is to be made according to the reports the special commissions are expected to submit in a few days. Referring to the government's responsability, the two leaders said that such a procedure was not expected to allow the promotion of major laws. As far as the managing board of the Audit Court was concerned, Mr Diaconescu said the situation was to be solved in the next two days. RADOR

[02] PDSR's call for dialogue between Romania's president and political parties

The leaders of the Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR) would like the Romanian president to start a dialogue with political parties in the next two weeks. The dialogue is expected to focus on Romania's economic difficulties and the country's foreign relations. PDSR first vicepresident Adrian Nastase told a press conference on Tuesday that the meeting was absolutely necessary as it might lead to a solution designed to solve RoMania's difficult situation. Mr Nastase said the PNL leader, Mircea Ionescu Question, welcomed the proposal, and the PDSR was still expecting the other parties in the governing coalition to answer its call. RADOR

[03] Gabriel Bivolaru to appear in court

The Attorney's General Office with Romania's Supreme Court of Justice has ruled that PDSR deputy Gabriel Bivolaru should appear in court following allegations of forgery, use of forgery, forged documents, forged money and other forged values. The prosecution also ordered the disjunction of the cases concernig Gabriel Bivolaru's wife, Mona DeFreitas, and Monica Paula Plazzota, a former BRD employee (ed.n. [04] Reports on miners' invasion in January

The MP commissioners monitoring the activity of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) during the Mifth miners' invasion in January have confirmed the reports published in the Tuesday edition of "Evenimentul Zilei" daily. They however warned that the reports did not prove anything and an inquiry by the Attorney General's Office was the only entitled to establish the facts. The vicepresident of the commission, PDSR MP Ovidiu Cameliu Petrescu, has admitted that the miners' ivasion in January was more likely to lead to "more violence than the previous miners' invasions have been raising in the past".

PNL deputy Vasile Mandroviceanu said: "Such things may have never gone to the press. If they do, then it means that some of the SRI developing files are disclosed, and the conclusions may never be the real ones as those involved are now warned, and they may take the necessary measures to dismiss some of their faults. The SRI may do nothing but lose when such reports go to the press. If I am to reach a conclusion (...), I believe that some interests and forces would like Romania to rMmain under Eastern influences".

SRI spokesman Ovidiu Iordache explained: "Some information was out of context, some were allegations, and some were exagerated while parts of the narration were designed as an answer to certain interests, and this is not the kind of report the SRI experts use to do". According to reports published in "Evenimentul Zilei", Miron Cozma's mission was to perpetuate the protests of the miners in the Jiu Valley to allow the other trade unionists in the country go to Bucharest and make their protest turn into a coup. The foreign support would have included the picketing of the Romanian embassy in Paris by French trade unionists while the Chinese embassy in Bucharest was supposed to enforce its relations with the Greater Romania Party (PRM) who was expected to come to power. [05] China's embassy denounces the reports in "Evenimentul Zilei"

Following the reports in the Tuesday edition of "Evenimentul Zilei" about China's alleged involvement in the Miners' invasion in January and the Chinese Communist Party's financial support of the PRM to help it come to power, a communique issued by the Chinese embassy in Bucharest says that neither the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) nor the Chinese government have ever supported a Romanian politcal party nor did they ever promised financial support to anyone. According to the communique, such reports damage both the CCP's prestige and the noble friendship between the two countries and their people. RADOR

[06] "Romania missed the chance of becoming a mediator in the Kosovo conflict", Romanian foreign minister admits

According to Romanian Foreign Minister Andrei Plesu, Romania has missed the chance of becoming a mediator in the Kosovo conflict given its traditional good relations with Yugoslavia. The Romanian foreign minister said he was really very sorry that he did not intervened as much as he could despite the fact that Romania might have been accused of supporting Belgrade's positionM In his opinion, both sides should use the chance provided by the negotiations in Rambouillet and reach a compromise.
