  • [01] Floods in center and western Romania

    Preliminary data regarding situation of floods in this country read that most affected by floods counties are Alba, Arad, Bihor, Bistrita-Nasaud, Caras-Severin, Cluj, Hunedoara, Maramures, Mures and Satu-Mare. The communique releasing the data also reads that death toll indicates seven, affected were 489 localities plus about 85,000 hectares of agricultural land. 16 localities have no drinking water, 13 lack power and about 500 bridges were destroyed by high floods. At the same time 17 national highways and roads, 52 county roads and 103 communal roads were partly or totally destroyed.

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu visited the areas affected by floods in center and western Romania. The Prime Minister flew over by helicopter together with defense minister Sorin Franzaverde and minister of environmental protection Romica Tomescu over the areas which are most affected and talked to people in several towns and villages in counties Alba, Timis and Hunedoara.

    President of Romania Emil Constantinescu convened a special session of the Supreme Council for Defense of Romania ( CSAT ) for tomorrow, 12 April, to analyze the effects of the floods in the last few days. According to information from the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, CSAT crisis group has been on red alert since Monday 10 April following the situation of the floods in this country as well as weather forecasts for Romania in the very near future.

    The Cabinet will give victims of the floods in the affected areas food and clothes worth 1.2 thousand million lei, the costs being entirely covered by the state reserve. Cabinet Minister Vlad Rosca said that in the near future, also from reserves of the Romanian state, construction materials will be given to the people whose homes were destroyed or affected. Weather forecast indicates that water flow of the rivers of Romania decreases in the following days but level of the Danube water is on the increase, well above flood level at Gruia, Calafat, Bechet, Corabia, Turnu Magurele, Zimnicea and Oltenita, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.     [02] National Bank of Romania issues communique

    A communique of the National Bank of Romania reads that our country is fully able to pay back its foreign debt instalments both this year, 2000, and in the future, as the process of building up Romania's foreign stand continues to register positive results. The National Bank of Romania also mentions that international reserves of Romania in hard currency and in gold are now worth 2.5 billion USD. This year the foreign debt of our country does not exceed one billion USD so it is absolutely out of the question that Romania could not face its foreign debt obligations, reads the communique of the National Bank and of the Finance Ministry of Romania. The issuing of the communique has been triggered by the release of the note of Standard and Poors' Agency according to which Romania would be, alongside two other nations,in the position of not being able to cope with debt obligations, due to fiscal fragility and currency reserves status, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.     [03] Romanian - Hungarian agreement in health protection

    Arpad Gogl and Gabor Hajdu, ministers of health of Hungary and Romania signed in Budapest, Hungary, on Monday a draft of collaboration for health protection and medical assistance between the two countries. In the future it is stipulated that the two ministries send each other reports about epidemics. At the same time the two ministries are supporting direct collaboration of health units of the two and will be creating facilities for bettering the activity of pharmacists and phisicians of both Romania and Hungary.     [04] Protocols of Romanian Democratic Convention cooperation of member parties and political associations

    Leaders of the political parties and those of civil associations of the Romanian Democratic Convention signed last night two protocols of collaboration in the enlarged alliance, one for local elections and the other one for the parliamentary ones. The first refers to local elections and it was signed by PNTCD, PER and the civil formations of the alliance. The second protocol for the parliamentary elections of Romania was signed by PNTCD, PNL, PER, FER and all civil formations of the Romanian Democratic Convention as after the local ballot, PNL and FER join the enlarged Convention for the parliamentary elections. An important provision of both protocols is that the civil associations of the Romanian Democratic Convention have the right to morally censor electoral lists which are made and approved by the political parties member of the Convention, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.     [05] A Romanian invents new CD - ROM

    Representatives of the World Bank, of the Chamber of Commerce, of the Presidency and of the Informational Forum met last night at the Romanian Academy to seek solutions for financing the production of a prototype invented by Doctor Engen Pavel of Romania. This new type of CD - ROM made of glass having 600 strata can store the entire Library of Congress for 1000 years. The Government of Japan has already given four billion Yen for the implementation of the Romanian Doctor's invention but we need 100,000 USD for the patent. Romania is annually loosing four or five world class inventions as we cannot organize the production of prototypes for these inventions, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    [06] Bucharest military court asks for the extradition of general Stanculescu

    Bucharest military court asked minister of justice Valeriu Stoica to start the procedure for extraditing general Stanculescu who, according to his Court Dossier, could be in London, the United Kingdom. If started the procedure is first brought to the British Court of Law. General Stanculescu was convicted, alongside general Chitac to 15 years in prison for stifling the revolt of the Timisoara revolutionaries in December 1989, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    [07] Statement of President of PNTCD Ion Diaconescu

    PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party - leader Ion Diaconescu has said that his party will continue to be faithful to its principles and political line which has already been validated in the preceeding electoral campaigns. Mr. Diaconescu was quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI saying that he cannot talk of any alliance now before the elections as he believes in the victory of his party and in the fact that PNTCD will again be able to win elections. Mr. Diaconescu added that in no way will PNTCD seek advantages for its members while a ruling party, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    [08] German investments in Romania

    German ambassador to Romania, Woldf Dietrich Schilling said that there is a great interest of German companies to invest in Romania there where there is support from the local communities. The German diplomat added that business relations between the two countries develop when cultural relations between Germany and Romania have a solid basis. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI which reports the news item the domains of interest for the German companies are industrial chemistry, textiles, furniture, fish and animal breeding. RADOR

    The President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, visits the areas affected by the floods in western and central Romania.

    Petre Roman, foreign minister of Romania, continues his visit to Saudi Arabia.

    Coalition leaders are meeting today in Bucharest.
