    [02] The Prime Minister of Romania answers the allegations of ApR leader Melescanu

    Mugur Isarescu issued a communique reading that the allegations of Alliance for Romania leader Teodor Melescanu do nothing else but reflect the fact that the latter lacks any economic and financial arguments and has no solutions for the good of the country. Referring to the invitation which the ApR leader has made the Prime Minister of Romania to report to Parliament on the real situation of the country, Mr. Isarescu thanks Mr. Melescanu and expects him to send an official invitation to stand before the Parliament of Romania with the precise date and hour when he is expected to give explanations.

    Premier Isarescu says the allegations of Mr. Melescanu according to whom public money would be spent for the electoral campaign of Prime Minister Isarescu are an offense for the entire cabinet of Romania. In a communique to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI it is noted that a few months back the Cabinet reported a sound economic growth and measures for the improvement of the living standards of the population, of the pensioners in the first place. Foreign credit is destined in the main place to restructuring the entire pension system and in no way is it destined to superficial increases with no effects for the future. More than this, the present economic situation and the fact that the foreign debt of Romania decreased substantially as against 1996 allow the Cabinet to contract foreign credits on a long term in advantageous conditions without laying any burden on the future Cabinet. At the same time it is written in the Communique that the Prime Minister has never said or intimated that he would be the best in the team stressing all the time the value of the team members and the very efficient activity they unfold.

    [04] The President of PDSR Ion Iliescu is making a visit to Germany

    The president of the Social Democracy Party of Romania Ion Iliescu is making a visit to Germany in the interval 27 - 30 August at the invitation of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Frankfurt and of Comerz Bank, one of the most important banks of Germany. The aim of the visit is to promote Romania as a land for German investors. Mr. Ion Iliescu is accompanied by vicepresident of PDSR Hildegard Puwak and MP Florin Georgescu, former Finance Minister.

    [05] Chief negociator of the International Monetary Fund for Romania has arrived at Bucharest

    Mr. Emanuel Zervoudakis is in Bucharest for talks which have begun earlier today with officials of the Finance Ministry of this country and those of the National Bank of Romania. Finance Minister Remes said the negociations with the IMF representatives will last by 11 September. He predicted that the negociations will end with good results and the second instalment of the loan to Romania as part of the stand-by agreement will be released by 15 October.

    [06] Train and subway tickets will cost more

    At the end of last week following inflation train and subway tickets cost more. Starting 26 August train tickets cost by 7.2 per cent more and subway tickets cost 9.11 per cent more.

    The Chairman of the Romanian Senate, Mircea Ionescu Quintus attends in the interval 28 August

    2 September, the Conference of the Presidents of national Parliaments that unfolds at the United Nations in New York.

    Emanuel Zervoudakis, chief negociator of the International Monetary Fund for Romania, begins talks today with the representatives of the Finance Ministry after talks last week at experts level.

    The members of CDR 2000 start bilateral talks for an accord on candidates placing on electoral lists.

    Extraordinary conference of PDSR and of the Romanian Democratic Forum for the launching of the appeal FOR ION ILIESCU at noon at the Diplomats' Club.

    The President of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - Ion Iliescu is in Germany on a visit at the invitation of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and of COMMERZ BANK.

    United States Ambassador James Rosapepe is in the town of Cluj to attend the inauguration of the company RECOGNOS which is a Romanian - American software joint venture.

    Reception today on the occasion of the national holiday of the Republic of Moldova.

    [08] ANNIVERSARIES and COMMEMORATIONS

    Birthday of baritone Nicolae Herlea who was born in 1927. He is one of the greatest of the entire operatic world and was at the peak of his career in the sixties including two year contract with the METROPOLITAN after numerous splendid performances at LA SCALA with THE BARBER OF SEVILLE and RIGOLETTO. His debut at the MET was with MARQUIS DE POSA in DON CARLOS.

    Transition of writer Calistrat Hogas in 1917 whose technique is to this day an example for students and writers alike. Hogas was one of the finest exegetes of Latin and Greek classics and that showed in the masterpieces he created in the Romanian language.
