ATHENS - The former Spanish premier, Philippe Gonzales is likely to replace Carl Bildt in the office of high representative for the former Yugoslavia this spring, writes the Greek paper "Elephterotipia". The paper writes that Gonzales is well-known by his diplomatic skill, and his entrance examination was successful last December when, upon the invitation of Serbia's president Slobodan Milosevic, he came on behalf of OSCE to Serbia in order to check results in Yugoslavia. Gonzales confirmed the opposition's victory and called on Milosevic to recognise it.

BERLIN - Slobodan Milosevic and Franjo Tudjman, presidents of Serbia and Croatia respectively, stole not only votes but future of their own peoples, as well, says a commentary published by the German paper "Zeit", adding that Milosevic and Tudjman's time is running out, this owing partly to their neglecting of the opposition.

BERLIN - The German daily "Yunge Welt" quotes her saying NATO will not be able to stabilise peace within 18 months time in which process the German Government, first of all defence minister Folkner Rie, has completely different motives.

SKOPLJE - The leader of the Socialist Party of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (BJRM) Ljubisav Ivanov, denied accusations coming from the BYRM premier and president of the Socialdemocratic Alliance, Branko Crvenovski, that Socialists want to reintegrate the BYRM into Yugoslavia.

THESALONIKI - Measures of stabilisation and restrictions of public expenditures, undertaken by the Greek Government to make the allowed budget deficit adjusted for requirements envisaged by EU Mastricht Agreement, provoked a row of strikes of farmers and teachers in Greece.

MOSCOW - Talks on release of 15 persons taken hostage by Islam extremists in Tajikistan are continued with involvement of the Tajikistan's president Imomali Rakhmanov and one of Afganistani military commanders Mohamad Sah Masud. The hostagetakers demand that brother of a loyal military commander - who leads about forty Islamic warriors - be allowed return from Afghanistan to Tajikistan.
