OCT. 1 1997 DAY

NEWS REVIEW, REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

SARAJEVO - SFOR took over the Serb Radio TV (SRT) transmission towers in Udrigovo, Trebevic, Duge Njive and Leotar, on October 1, early morning. NATO defence ministers changed the agenda of their session in Maastricht, while NATO secretarygeneral Javier Solana stated that the transmitters were under control of Republika Srpska (RS) president Biljana Plavsic's supporters. "These transmitters will remain under Banjaluka's control", Solana stated. The spokesman of the SFOR Office in Doboj, major Arthur Bliski, confirmed that multinational forces of North 1 Division, early this morning, without facing any resistance, took control over the Radio TV transmitters in Udrigovo and Duge Njive. In OHR announcement the operation, carried out with support of high representative Carlos Wetendorp, is said to be "retaliation" against the SRT. About 40 SFOR armoured vehicles took part in seizing of the transmission tower on Trebevic.

SARAJEVO - The RS Government believes that SFOR action of seizing the SRT transmitters was well-prepared and planed with the RS president Biljana Plavsic, of which the newest reports from the Maastricht summit testify. The action was directed at forcible placing of the SRT under Ms. Plavsic and her aides' control and sacking of legally elected RS leaders. The RS Government announced a fierce response to these actions. Because of the events in Udrigovo, Duge Njive, Trebevic and Leotar, first part of its session will be continued this afternoon.

SERB SARAJEVO - All SRT transmitters, except that under Ms. Plavsic's control were seized, and our technicians were forced to discontinue the programme, at 8:05 am, two hours after the SFOR action, stated the SRT general manager Miroslav Toholj. BEOGRAD - The president of the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), Vojislav Kostunica, assessed that by take over of radio TV transmitters in RS, the international community demonstrated once again that it applied double standards in B-H. "Recent terrorist actions in Sarajevo and Mostar passed almost without any reaction, while, on the other side, the international community responded to, as it calls it, verbal violence", Kostunica stated at a press conference in Belgrade.

MAASTRICHT - US defence secretary William Cohen expects a decision on the future stay of US troops in RS and the Federation of B-H in January or February 1998. Cohen stated in Maastricht that he favoured SFOR transformation from the present 39,000 -strong force into a smaller deterrence force. The change should be completed by the end of June 1998, when SFOR mandate expires.
