[01] Two communities to hold darts match

Nicosia, Jun 28 (CNA) -- Two hundred Greek Cypriots expect to cross to the Turkish occupied areas Sunday to take part in a darts tournament with their Turkish Cypriot colleagues

The match, sponsored by the Australian contingent of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP), was described by the organisers as a non political, charity event.

Tom Thoupos, one of the organisers, told CNA that the Greek Cypriot participants will gather tomorrow morning at the Ledra Palace checkpoint to cross to the areas occupied by Turkey since its 1974 invasion of Cyprus, for the match, which will be held at the medieval Bellapais Abbey.

He also told the World Service of the BBC he does not believe there will be a problem with crossing to the occupied areas and that UNFICYP has been given a list of those who will take part in the event.

According to the Turkish Cypriot press, one Greek Cypriot and two Turkish Cypriot bands will be entertaining the players.

Participants will also donate blood in aid of Thalassaemia sufferers, a hereditary blood disorder.

It is the second darts match between the two communities. The first took place three years ago in the government controlled part of the island.

A limited number of Greek Cypriots cross to the Turkish occupied areas under the auspices of the UN or the American Embassy which are promoting bicommunal gatherings of professional groups and other organisations.

[02] US diplomat on unofficial visit

Nicosia, Jun 28 (CNA) -- Newly appointed State Department Coordinator for Cyprus, Thomas Miller, is paying an unofficial visit to Cyprus for meetings with political and other personalities, in view of the upcoming UN-led negotiations for a Cyprus settlement.

Miller had a working lunch yesterday with President of the Liberal Party, Nicos Rolandis, businessman and former Democratic Rally deputy Dinos Lordos and the Secretary of the Council of Ministers, Chrysostomos Sophianos, in the presence of US ambassador in Nicosia Kenneth Brill.

According to CNA sources the American diplomat is being briefed about the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides' positions on the fundamental aspects of the Cyprus problem and the possibility of achieving progress in the New York talks.

Miller came to Cyprus Thursday and will leave for Athens Sunday, where he is serving with the US embassy. He is expected to take up his post at the State Department in August.

His other meetings in Nicosia have not been disclosed neither has it been announced if he has had meetings in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus.

Miller's visit was not announced nor have any statements been made pertaining to his meetings.

The American diplomat is considered the "key player" in the American Presidential Emissary, Richard Holbrooke's efforts for a solution to the Cyprus question.

Holbrooke will work on the Cyprus problem one week a month and will closely coordinate his efforts with the State Department's team on Cyprus.

The two American diplomats are not expected to be present at the Cyprus peace talks, that will take place near New York between July 9 - 13, but it is believed they will visit Cyprus after the first direct negotiations on the Cyprus question to be held in three years.
