[02] Relatives of missing call for an end to suffering

Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) -- Relatives of persons missing in Cyprus have slammed Turkey and the international community for failing to promote universal respect of human rights and for applying double standards to serve their interests.

"The world watches speechless the selective application of human rights in areas where the interests of the powerful are served," the coordinating council of the committees of relatives of missing said in statement today, to mark the 49th anniversary since the adoption of the universal declaration of human rights.

The statement said relatives of the missing have been striving for the past 23 years (since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus) to establish the whereabouts of their loved ones.

"The fact that the issue of the missing has remained unresolved is due not only to Ankara's negative stance on the matter but also to the passive attitude of international organisations and governments which could impose compliance and respect of human rights," the statement added.

The Council calls on the world community to "assume its historic role and restore human rights throughout the globe."

It also urged the UN to work in the right direction in order to persuade Turkey to cooperate in the search for those missing, since its troops invaded and occupied the island's northern part.

Efforts to settle this humanitarian issue have come to nothing so far. An agreement, brokered by the UN in July this year, called for the exchange of information on the missing between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.

The Greek Cypriot side has notified the UN within the set deadline it was ready to exchange the information. The Turkish Cypriot side has yet to come up with the information.

[03] Medical work in Cyprus praised

Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus' achievements in genetics and neurology rank very highly in international terms, according to a programme aired recently on French television.

Cyprus, along with the US, Canada, France, the UK, the Netherlands and Italy, are listed as the seven countries where research into genetics is at an advanced stage.

The director of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Lefkos Middleton, told the programme "Telethon '97", the Institute pioneered work in gene therapy in thalassemea, hereditary kidney diseases, forms of mental retardation and hereditary neuropathies.

[04] Britain urged to initiate moves on Famagusta

Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) -- A Conservative Euro-MP has called on his Prime Minister to help the return of normal life in the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta as a first step in normalising the Cyprus question.

Leader of the Conservative Euro-MPs Edward McMillan-Scott has written to British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook urging him to take the initiative on Famagusta.

"EU enlargement, a process in which Euro-MPs wish to include Turkey, gives the EU the opportunity to oversee the return of Famagusta to the bicommunal civil society both communities once enjoyed through tourism and trade," McMillan-Scott said.

Jordan, Egypt and Israel, he noted, "have shown how it can be done on the Red Sea coast.

He also said that Britain "has a moral duty and the opportunity as the EU presidency to take the lead."

The Conservative deputy said during a recent visit to Cyprus that "if Turkey does not agree, it would be difficult to see how the European Parliament can sustain the Customs Union with Turkey, let alone enhance it as planned."

Famagusta, a thriving port and holiday resort of some 60,000 inhabitants before the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, is now a ghost- town.

Turkey, which effectively controls the town, has often threatened to settle the town.

The UN Security Council considers any attempt to settle any part of Varosha (Famagusta) by people other than its inhabitants as "inadmissible and calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the UN."
