[01] No more foreigners in construction industry
Nicosia, Apr 27 (CNA) -- A ministerial committee on foreign workers in
Cyprus today decided to indefinitely stop issuing new work permits or
renewing existing ones for foreign workers in the construction industry, it
was announced here today.
Interior Minister Dinos Michaelides told the press Monday the committee
took this decision because of the increase of local unemployed workers in
this sector.
He explained that it was the government's firm policy to stop issuing
such permits for foreign workers in any industrial sector, where there is
unemployment of local workers.
There are some 1,000 foreigners currently employed in the construction
industry, the Minister said.
He called on trade unions to help the government combat the phenomenon
of illegal workers and report those who employ them.
Present at the ministerial meting was also Labour and Social Insurance
Minister Andreas Mousiouttas, and officials from other ministries.
