    [03] Anorthosis win Cyprus League

Nicosia, May 11 (CNA) -- Anorthosis, a refugee football club, from the Turkish-occupied eastern coastal town of Famagusta, are the 1997-1998 league champions of Cyprus.

This is the second consecutive time that Anorthosis win the league championship and this is their ninth league title since they were founded in 1911.

Anorthosis secured the 59th Cyprus Football Association (KOP) First Division League last Saturday after a 6-0 home triumph over Evagoras Paphos.

Omonia Nicosia, who were two points behind them in the table, after Anorthosis held them to an away crucial draw last week, finished second after a goal-less draw to Ethnikos Achna.

The champions are now preparing for their history's second double if they manage to win this Friday's cup final against Apollonas Limassol, at the Nicosia Makarios Stadium.

The "Great Lady" of Cyprus football had a glorious course in the 50s and 60s and a similar comeback in the 90s.

They won their first title in 1949, cup winners, and in 1950 they won their first championship, securing their first double in 1962.

    They were champions in 1950, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1963 and after 32 years in 1995, 1997 and 1998.

They were cup winners in 1949, 1962, 1971 and 1975.

Anorthosis were forced out of their Famagusta home town after the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and occupation.

They are now based in the southeastern coastal town of Larnaca where they have constructed their own football stadium.

Three teams were relegated to the Second Division. They are APOP of Paphos, Anagennisis of Dherynia and Ethnikos of Assia.

Three other teams, namely Olympiakos of Nicosia, Aris of Limassol and Doxa of Katokopia, were promoted to the First Division.
