1150:CYPPRESS:01[01] Anorthosis beats Apollon in Cup FinalNicosia, May 16 (CNA) -- Anorthosis, one of Cyprus' refugee football clubs, last night won the Cup Final, completing the double for the second time in its history.Anorthosis defeated Limassol's Apollon 3-1 at the Nicosia Makarion stadium and will participate in the Champions' League in the next season. Finalist Apollon will represent Cyprus in the Cup Winners Cup. Krismarevic scored first for Anorthosis after 24 minutes in the first half, but eleven minutes later Spoliaric put Apollon back on level terms. The Limassol club enjoyed territorial advantage until the last 12 minutes of the game when Okkas put Anorthosis in front again. Four minutes later Louca scored Anorthosis' 3rd goal, securing his team's first League and Cup double since 1962. Anorthosis, one of Cyprus' strongest first division soccer clubs, was founded and based in Famagusta on the island's eastern coast. The club is based in the coastal town of Larnaca since the 1974 Turkish invasion and the occupation of its town-base. CNA GG/MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCYMMMM1300:CYPPRESS:02[02] Commonwealth experts to advise government on womens' equalityNicosia, May 16 (CNA) -- Two Commonwealth specialists on the rights of women will be coming to Cyprus tomorrow for meetings with ministers and other officials.After their week-long visit, Dr. Rawwida Baksh-Sooden and Audrey Ingram Roberts will prepare a study on raising awareness within the government mechanisms on the equality of women. The two experts will be visiting Cyprus at the invitation of Justice and Public Order Ministry. During their stay, the Commonwealth specialists will meet the ministers of Justice and Public Order, Labour and Social Insurance, Education and Culture and Health. They will also meet with the House of Representatives Labour Committee and women MPs, the Planning Bureau Director as well as government officers responsible for womens rights. It is the second time Commonwealth experts on womens issues are visiting Cyprus to prepare a report with their suggestions. Last year an expert on women in political life had visited Cyprus. CNA MA/MCH/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1320:CYPPRESS:03[03] Occupation regime renews illegal detention of GreeksNicosia, May 16 (CNA) -- The regime in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus has illegally renewed for another three days the detention of three Greeks apprehended by Turkish troops earlier this week, according to the Turkish Cypriot press.The three Greeks, reported to be gypsies, were illegally apprehended by Turkish troops on Monday within the buffer zone on the island's eastern part. They were in the Strovilia area selling their goods. They are Christos Demetriou, 35, George Charalambous, 35, and George Alexiou, 26. Meanwhile, a UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) team, including a doctor and a translator, plan to visit the three men. A 180-kilometre long demarcation line, patrolled by UNFICYP soldiers, divides Cyprus since Turkish troops invaded the island in 1974 and occupied 37 per cent of its territory. CNA MA/GP/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1410:CYPPRESS:04[04] Minister calls for gradual telecommunications liberalisationNicosia, May 16 (CNA) -- Communication and Works Minister, Leondios Ierodiaconou, today stressed the need for the gradual liberalisation of Cyprus' telecommunications field.In a message on the occasion of tomorrow's International Telecommunications Day, Ierodiaconou points out that telecommunications have been liberalised in a large number of countries, including European Union countries and the US. The liberalisation of telecommunications in Cyprus is fervently opposed by some political party's and trade unions who believe it would affect employees at the state-run Cyprus Telecommunications Authority and may affect consumers. Iederodiaconou said the International Union of Telecommunications emphasises that liberalisation not only affects the relations between member states but also the services each country provides. The minister expressed certainty that "a better course for the island's telecommunications would improve the quality of life and upgrade Cyprus' role as a telecommunications hub in the eastern Mediterranean region." He also pointed out that in the past few years new facilities, such as the Internet, play a major role in the information society, of which Cyprus must be a part. "In today's changing environment, international telecommunications are being developed and Cyprus will also be affected," Ierodiaconou said.
