    [01] Kyprianou - ECHR decision

Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) -- President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou sent a congratulatory telegrams to Attorney General Alecos Markides, Titina Loizidou and lawyer Achilleas Demetriades for their success in the case against Turkey in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

In his telegram to Markides, Kyprianou describes the decision of the ECHR as a "historic landmark which opens new prospectives in the struggle of the people of Cyprus for survival".

Kyprianou also praised Loizidou's determination and strength in pursuing her rights, pointing out that the decision is a proof to "those in and out of Cyprus who attempt to distort reality".

The House President also congratulated Demetriades for his contribution to a case of great political importance.

The ECHR ordered Turkey to pay 300.000 CYP pounds (one CYP pound is about 2 US dollars) damages to Loizidou for the continued violation of her right to peaceful enjoyment of her property.

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus' territory since their 1974 invasion, in violation on repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
