CNA MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1710:CYPPRESS:02[02] Frenchman - Protest - PougiourosNicosia, Aug 14 (CNA) -- A French musician and avid friend of Cyprus begun a 24 hour one-man anti-occupation protest at the Dherynia checkpoint at midday today to demonstrate against the continued occupation of the island's northern third.Michel Maillard, who is married to a Greek Cypriot from the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta, said he will remain under a tent at the Dherynia checkpoint, in the eastern coast, just like refugees did back in 1974. His 24-hour vigil coincides with today's 24th anniversary of the second phase of the Turkish invasion, and the second anniversary since the murder of Greek Cypriots, Tasos Isaak and Solomos Solomou, brutally killed by Turkish extremists during demonstrations in the Dherynia buffer zone in 1996. Maillard said that "the world rushed to save Kuwait, the world is crying for Kosovo, but the world forgets the drama of Cyprus". With his symbolic protest, Maillard said he wants to "say no to the fait accompli which the Turkish invasion has imposed to secure the division of Cyprus". He said it is a shame that European countries, and especially France which is a human rights advocate, continue to support Turkey, a country where human rights are violated every day. Maillard said the people of Cyprus should have the freedom of movement in their own country and refugees should be able to return to their homes. Meanwhile, Famagusta Mayor, Andreas Pougiouros, sent more than 2.000 letters of protest to presidents and heads of state or governments, as well as deputies, urging them to help free Famagusta and the other occupied areas of Cyprus. "Twenty-four years are far too many for us to endure the injustice and flagrant violation of our human rights and freedoms. We appeal to you to help us now", said Pougiouros. The second and final phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, that began on July 20, took place between August 14-16. Heavily reinforced with armoured formation, the Turkish army succeeded in occupying 37 per cent of the island. CNA EC/MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1720:CYPPRESS:03[03] Cyprus - IranNicosia, Aug 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus unreservedly condemned the arrest of Iranian diplomats and a journalist earlier this week at the Iranian Consulate during the capture of Mazar-i-Sharif by Afghanistan's Taleban Islamic Movement.Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, reassured Iran's Charges d' Affaires in Cyprus, Ali Akbar Farazi, in a meeting yesterday, that Nicosia will do everything possible to restore respect of diplomatic norms. The Iranian diplomat informed Kasoulides that during the town's capture by the Taleban Islamic Movement, 11 members of the Iranian Consulate and the correspondent of the Iranian News Agency (IRNA) were arrested, in violation of international norms concerning diplomatic and consular immunity, as defined by the Geneva Convention. According to an official announcement issued today, Farazi urged the Cyprus government to back others in demanding the immediate release of the diplomats and the IRNA correspondent. "The Foreign Minister unreservedly condemned the action and reassured that Cyprus will not omit to do whatever possible to restore respect of diplomatic norms in this specific case," according to the official statement. CNA EC/MA/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1725:CYPPRESS:04[04] Defence Minister - Message to TsohatzopoulosNicosia, Aug 14 (CNA) -- Defence Minister Yiannakis Omirou today thanked his Greek counterpart for Greece's support to Cyprus' struggle to end the Turkish occupation of part of the island.In a message to Akis Tsohatzopoulos on the occasion of tomorrow's Greek Armed Forces day, Omirou underlines the security the people of Cyprus feel since 1993 when the two countries decided on a joint defence pact. "I would like to express my sincere thanks for the (Greek) nation's firm solidarity, lead by the Armed Forces, to the struggle of the people of Cyprus to end the Turkish occupation and restore the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic," Omirou says. He describes the defence pact as "a practical expression of Hellenism's solidarity towards Cyprus at these crucial hours" and adds that "it has strengthened the feeling of security among our people". The Defence Minister stressed that the pact, along with Cyprus' bid to join the European Union, are the two main pillars of the policy followed by the two countries, aiming at a peaceful and honourable solution to the Cyprus problem. The defence pact provides that Greece will offer Cyprus air, land and sea support in case of a new Turkish offensive against the island. Turkey invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory in 1974. It continues to maintain a 35-thousand strong military presence in the island's northern third, despite numerous UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
